What is your purpose with this thread, AV1611VAET?
To show that something can have both a physical age and an existential age, and that the two ages don't have to be the same.

Indeed it doesn't have a history.

Yet it is one of the more mature canoes around, as far as temper is concerned.
Come on AV, is it necessary to go over this incessantly?

The canoe is an abstract, the wood that it is made from is not "the canoe".
The canoe is the name for that particular arrangement of materials and its age is a measure of how long it has existed in that arrangement.

If I were to dismantle the canoe and make a chair from the parts, how old is the canoe?

You seem to pick examples that are intended to muddy the issue somewhat by incorporating components that retain their previous appearance.

If I were to ask you how old the tree was when felled I'd likely get an answer corresponding to that particular arrangement of the materials, despite the fact that some of the water, CO2, etc. that it was built from may have been floating around unchanged for millions of years and in a different state for billions of years previously. We don't say that the tree is billions of years old, because back then it wasn't a tree.

The canoe doesn't have a history. Any history (evidence of things that have happened in the past) belongs to the tree. If you had a one day old canoe that signs of being in water for the last three years and scuff marks made by banging up against banks etc then you might have something to talk about.

I cut down a 1000-year-old tree, hollow it out and make a canoe out of it; all in a day's time.

How old is the canoe when I'm finished?
How's come you guys treat every question like it's an essay question?

If I started a thread and asked what 1 + 1 are, I'd get a picture and a paragraph, wouldn't I?

I understand you guys are in a philosophy that's heavily-ladened with rhetoric, but this is ridiculous.

Because not everything is as simple as 1 + 1. Sometimes it needs a bit more discussing or explaining. That said, most of the posts in this thread are only a couple of sentenses.

I don't buy this explanation -- but you're entitled to your opinion.

Perhaps you should clarify what the "existential age" and the "physical age" are.

This is a very weird thread. It seems that AV is arguing that the canoe existed in its current form longer than a day.

Yesterday it was a tree. Today it is a canoe. The canoe was carved for the tree. I don't know why it is so difficult to understand.

Okay, explain to me how an internal combustion engine works, but you're not allowed to use any more characters than you would to explain what 1+1 equals.

Can't you just accept that you're a lot less clever -- and far more predictable -- than you think you are?

How's come you guys treat every question like it's an essay question?

So you want to "show that something can have both a physical age and an existential age, and that the two ages don't have to be the same", but anything other than a number in reply is too wordy?

I appreciate that you believe you're right and you want us to recognise that you're right, but some of us disagree.

The canoe concept has one age, as does the wood concept and those ages depend on how you define that concept.

Would you like to talk about this or should I just say it's a day old and we can agree to disagree?

Oh ... now it's a 'canoe concept', and now it's a 'wood concept'.

And you want to talk about it?

No, thanks.
