  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Certain people are fond of claiming that all of the methods and equipment used in every single branch of science are all based on the same set of inherently flawed assumptions, and the only reason they return coherent and convergent results is because they were somehow calibrated to return those results in advance.

For those who subscribe to this hypothesis, I'd like to ask two questions:

1. Applied science leads to technology. If scientific methodology is based on arbitrary assumptions, could those assumptions be replaced with a completely different set of assumptions and still produce working technology, like the computer you're reading this on?

2. If you are so convinced that you can see something that every scientist throughout history is blind to, please explain exactly how their instruments are incorrect, and how they should modify those instruments in order to gather the correct data. If you can't do this, then you have no basis to be making such a claim.

No.

I can't do this.

As I'm fond of saying -- until you can create a machine that can do this:

2 Kings 6:17 And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.

... I will conclude science to be myopic.

I say this'll be derailed in less than five pages. Any takers?

Then you have no basis for your claim.

But science is not supposed to be able to do that. That's a spiritual matter, irrelevant to scientific investigation. Non-overlapping magisteria and all. You might as well ask a professional jazz musician to build a nuclear reactor.
