I think the subtext is, in a way: would you be where God wanted you to be, if not for the reason He would give you (to do so).

This is like saying to the scientist: "do you attempt to prove the point, by beginning to agree with God?"

I think there is a lot of sense, to that - if all we did was second guess God, there would be little in the way of discovery: at least of the inevitable; but on the other hand, it may be the inevitable that we most want?

I'm not saying we would discover more that way, just that what we did discover, would be all the more dependable, for it ("dependable" not a word, you would expect to be attributed to "scientists", but there you go!)

I would gladly spend a night in prayer in a church, even without the $100. It would be welcome, as I am always at peace more in church.
