  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I was making a hole into a bottle of muriatic acid (29% concentration) I bought 2 days ago, and the bottle squirted its contents. I'm not wearing any protection and some of the liquid got to my bare skin in my hands and legs. Some of the liquid also got into the scissors I've used to make the hole and immediately started making white smoke, very pungent fumes, and visibly corroding/dissolving the scissor blade.

As for the acid that went to my skin, it did absolutely nothing. Absolutely no effect at all. So I wasn't in a hurry to wash it off but did anyway due to the smell after more than 10 seconds of exposure. The next day, there are still no signs of acid damage on my skin.

This was actually the 2nd time I had skin contact with the same acid product. The first time with moist/wet skin because I'm cleaning the bathroom caused a very mild effect similar to bleach and nothing else, no pain, no lingering effects.

I checked the internet afterwards and to my disbelief, I saw most articles saying some sort of immediate harm upon contact like 1st to 3rd degree burns, severe burns for >25% concentrated hydrochloric acid, wash with running water for some minutes.

None of that happened to me. Why would these articles lie about things like these? The main reason I posted here is seeing quite different real life results from what is said. If I can't even trust even seemingly highly reputable sources of information, who then can I trust?

That's what it's supposed to do.

Please take this in the way it's meant but you are prone to this conspiratorial thinking. The articles are not lying they are just supper cautious. Bleach has the same warning and I used to ignore beach splashes on me all the time. The advice is sound it's just super cautious.

As an aside don't go sticking metal objects into the side of muriatic acid containers; it;s an exothermic reaction.

Just because it didn't happen to you doesn't mean it's a conspiracy.

Your 'logic' doesn't even make sense: people on the internet says that this acid CAN have harmful effects, not WILL but CAN, and you obviously washed it off and nothing immediately happened, therefore it's a conspiracy?

To what end? Why? And by whom? Bleach International?

Some marketers of Muriatic Acid have included an additive that reduces the vapor the product gives off. So yours may not have been pure Hydrochloric Acid. I think you were very lucky not to have been burned. I've used the stuff for years and yes, it is powerful. Last year I used it to clean a fiberglass hull on a boat. Some spilled on the concrete below the boat and it really ate into the concrete. There is a spot there where the concrete is etched. Muriatic Acid is used in low concentration to clean and etch concrete before painting it. After a ton of rinsing. This stuff can be dangerous. It's no conspiracy. It's actual chemistry.

The bottle indicated 29% concentration. Only Wikipedia indicated that >25% concentration will cause severe burns.

I had no chance to dilute it with water since the spilled contents came directly from the bottle.

I also got exposed twice in two different conditions, one with moist/wet skin and lately with dry skin. Sources say the outcome is worse with moist/wet skin and it seemed to be true, however, the effect is very mild (similar to diluted bleach) even with delay before rinsing. In fact, my delayed response is due to the very mild or zero effect. If it actually caused pain (usually from the heat of the chemical reaction, according to sources), my response would be to immediately rinse it with cold water.

Stainless stees doesn't seem to be affected by the acid like knives and spoons. It affected the scissors so I guess it's a fake stainless steel product.

Bleach have stronger effect on my skin but still very mild and often goes unnoticeable, sometimes forget to wash it off.

Sources say rinse immediately for several minutes. I did not for more than 10 seconds and only rinsed my finger for several seconds.

The acid actually squirted from the bottle due to some pressure and I'm only wearing shorts at the time, no shirt. It's very likely the acid got elsewhere and should have taken a shower instead but didn't until the next day.

Nothing else happened. It seemed that muriatic acid for all its spectacular effect on many items have zero effect on dry human skin, only very mild effect on wet/moist skin.

Bleach had more effect on my skin yet ironically, the warnings on muriatic acid is more dramatic than for bleach.

So what’s the conspiracy here?! What is the problem that you're refusing to just say outright in plain English?

My title is a question. I really don't know if there's even a conspiracy.

Maybe the sources simply wanted to scare people against skin contact with muriatic acid for no reason at all. But why?

For someone who doesn't even know if there's a conspiracy, you're definitely trying your hardest to make it sound like a conspiracy.

And just because you didn't have a strong negative reaction to the acid doesn't mean others didn't. Don't overthink this.
