  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I have to reboot the system several times throughout the day to (temporarily) fix it.

First thing I would do is run a scan of your hard drive to see if has any errors; and this will fix most of them:

  1. Click on the Windows Explorer
    windows-10-file-explorer-icon.png
    folder icon on your taskbar
  2. Click on This PC menu item on the left-pane
  3. Look for the hard drive icon with the Windows logo
    windows-10-system-drive-icon.png
  4. Right-click on the hard drive, then choose Properties
  5. Select the Tools tab, then click the Check button
  6. Now click the → Scan drive option
  7. Windows will scan and fix any errors it encounters
  8. When Windows has finished, click OK to close the Properties window
  9. It’s a good idea to restart your PC when Windows has finished the Error Check.
Give that a try it may help.

Well if it is brand-new then I would bring it back to where you bought it and get them to fix it but if it's just an old laptop with the new installation of Windows 10, then it sounds like it might be an electrical short of some nature. Those are not easy to diagnose if you don't have the right equipment so it may be best to bring it into a local shop or your local Best Buy and then get them to diagnose it. The only other thing that you could do, which will take some time but won't cost you anything, is wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows 10.

That many problems with a New system?
I'd take it back to where I bought it.

Another option get a Linux Live Boot Disk, and boot Linux and see if you still have multiple issues. (Clock / Typing Errors, ect) if so, you've got bad hardware.

Before doing that I would run SeaTools which will properly check for bad sectors (it will take a few hours):
http://www.seagate.com/au/en/support/downloads/item/seatools-win-master/

Chkdsk will fix any filesystem errors (and in some cases bad sectors) but I've had things break particularly badly if a chkdsk runs on a failing drive.

If Seatools finds errors, backup immediately and (if still under warranty) take it back to your supplier.

If your computer has built in diagnostics it might not be a bad idea to give them a run through as well; in my experience they're not overly brilliant at detecting issues, but if it does detect an issue then it's a good start.

You may also want to double check what programs you have installed and uninstall anything that you aren't currently using (especially if it's an expired antivirus). Extra processes may be causing issues in the background.

Finally, if you can navigate to C:\Windows\MiniDump and get one or two of the most recent files uploaded to here we can peruse your BSOD and see what the error is.

Thanks, guys. I did a disc scan and no problems were fund, (actually, I found it does that automatically every week). I also did a virus and maleware scan. Nothing. Someone else suggested it might be the CMOS battery.

Anyway, I'll probably end up taking it back to Best Buy and let them fix it.

It would be incredibly unlikely it's the CMOS battery. That sort of thing would throw clock errors before booting into Windows.

But if you're happy to take it back to where you got it, that's going to be the better solution. I don't know what their policies would be, but I would definitely backup first though.

The motherboard on my desktop is about 8 years old or something like that and I hadn't been using it in a while because I mostly use an Android tablet now. I tried booting it up a couple of weeks ago and it crashed as soon as the boot screen came up not with a bsod but it just powered off. Tried a few times and couldn't get it to work but in so doing Windows notices that and will automatically run a repair which it did and I was able to reboot into windows and did a few things and then put it to sleep. I didn't use it for another couple of weeks and when I went to turn it on at that point it did the same thing and I couldn't even get into the bios settings. So I took the CMOS battery out and it booted up and I reinstalled everything from scratch. It works fine so I rebooted it and it booted up fine and then I rebooted it again and went into the BIOS and changed everything two current time date ext..and then put the battery back in after I checked it with my multimeter to make sure that it still have a lot of power or at least enough power and I did. So last week I went to use it again and it did the same thing just crashed at the boot screen. So at this point I'm not really sure what it is but I'm not really motivated to do much about it because my tablet suits all my needs right now.

What is wrong with my new, Windows 10 computer?

I've underlined the problem for you. Windows 10 is absolute junk. It corrupted a shared drive in our office and changed the read/write attributes of all of the files so that no non-Windows 10 computer could update the files (read only). The attributes could not be changed back to allow non-W10 computers to update them.

I totally disagree, I stuck with Windows 7 for a long time but Windows 10 is better and just as, if not more reliable. I have no idea how Windows 10 could change the read/write attributes of a shared drive in another computer, but I have a feeling it's more to do with the administrator of the network and the policies, than it is Windows 10.

Well, I'm the administrator. The policies didn't change. The drive was connected, by USB, to the Win10 computer and shared by other computers in the office.

It's a known problem: https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=windows+10+changed+files+to+read+only

The supposed fix, did not.

There are dozens of other issues - perhaps hundreds or thousands. It's a typical Windoze product released without proper testing.

I'm pretty sure you're not supposed to leave a USB drive connected to a computer while it's upgrading, but in any event there was a fix for it and from what I have read it is an unusual problem. I've upgraded about 10 computers to Windows 10 and it changed nothing that I didn't want it to change, including properties. It's definitely not a perfect world and computers but way too many people make Windows up to be the bad guy when in fact based on the number of computers that actually occupies the percentages are low as far as being problematic is concerned. Now from my own experience I never actually upgrade a computer to the next OS I always back it up wipe it and do a fresh install. Much quicker and less likely to have problems afterwards. Also because I keep everything that is stored on the storage drive and don't keep anything on the main drive other than the OS and software, it's really easy to just unplug the storage drive and upgrade your computer so it can't affect everything on the storage drive.

Who said we upgraded a computer? Who said we had the USB drive plugged into a computer while upgrading? You're making a number of (erroneous) assumptions.

So now you're going to start equivocating? Maybe you should make yourself very clear rather than being so vague about what the problems were? You said the drive WAS connected to the computer by USB.

Nope, not equivocating. You assumed facts not in evidence and now you're throwing rocks at me because your assumptions drew you to a public, erroneous conclusion. Just stop.
