Moving roughly a week from now

I am going to be moving a week from now (sometime from Saturday morning to Monday morning depending on what seems best at the time and how things go on packing and other considerations like last minute car maintenance). I am going to be driving cross country from western Pennsylvania (in between Philadelphia & Allentown) to my parents retirement house in Scotts Valley, California.

The major issue for thread is my car is a bit long in the tooth (a 2005 Pontiac Vibe). It actually has been running well the last few years, but I have not done lots of driving since moving out to PA in December of 2019.


I do feel pretty good about things. My financial situation is good if there are any problems like needing something repaired mid trip, and I got pretty good AAA Road Service, and a nice smart phone for navigation and calling help if need be.


I bumped up my moving time a week because I was informed by the Property Management company that runs the place, that the local borough is doing an inspection of all the apartments to have their rental license renewed. I was already thinking of leaving earlier anyway because I think right now things are kind of optimal (don't like weather that is cold, or having lots of rain etc. ).


When I originally planned the trip was going to see some friends along the way, but all my friends are traveling or sick, so it looks like it is just going to me and the Lord traveling together. So I expect it to be a little like a Spiritual retreat with lots of time for prayer and listening to my favorite Christian chant CD in my car. I talked to a Messianic rabbi friend and realized that my trip will coincide with the Festival of Booths, which kind of fits (being a literal and spiritual pilgrim).

I made a similar trip in ‘04 by myself in an older pickup. Was going through a divorce and drove from S.E. Iowa to my parents home in Utah.

I got a very strange situation with the property management company that runs the place. I called them twice as far as this official apartment complex inspection and me moving early than my original notice. Basically I wanted to warn them that one room doesn't have a smoke alarm for their inspection, and maybe get instructions or set up a meeting on handing over keys.....

Anyway when I go through the company voice mail and extension instructions and punch in the one for the office, I get an African sounding man who has no idea what I'm talking about and says it's a wrong number!

Well it looks like this was a bad phone glitch. They got my email and investigated it and were shocked at getting the African guy on their phone line!

Thanks for the prayers.

Most of the car packing etc. is going well. One point of contention that is hindering things is the trash removal this week at the apartment did not really happen. I think the trash truck came around and picked up a few bags but was probably mostly full at the time and never came back. I was really counting on having an empty dumpster to work with so I'm basically debating whether or not to leave things messier than I planned or extend things out a few days to have a crack at a fresh dumpster.

I was already originally planning on leaving some furniture in the apartment and having the management company deduct it from deposits etc. But may have them pick up more of the slack, since money isn't an issue for me right now.


But on the bright side, as my last fling here, on Thursday I took my friend Ryan and his wife out to Shady Maple buffet that is a good hour or so from where I live, It is famous because it is Amish run and it is the biggest buffet in the US. They got nice stuff there, it isn't cheap but it is really good!

I am about to start taking apart my desktop that I do my internet on and don't plan to be here again until, a week at the earliest, probably 10 days -14 days, but we will see how things go when I reach my folks house. I imagine I will be reading the forums on my mom's tablet, but not signing in and posting like what I did in the early Covid lockdown days of 2020 when I also was in California visiting them for a few months.

Well, I made it back to my folk's house a week and a half ago, on Tuesday Oct 18 or so. But I needed to get a new computer setup, and I found myself wrestling with the password log in (can't log in from Facebook anymore).

I had a good trip overall, but was glad for all the prayers from here, and a few other places. I had a few times where I could have got into trouble from bad weather, meeting a suspicious stranger, and road construction screwing up things at one place. I also found out after I arrived and had given my car away to my best friend that my brake rotors were warped. They braked OK normally, but in driving in the mountains the car shook a lot when you had to use them to control your speed.

But was happy overall with how things went, some of my friends did not think my car could make the trip!
