  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Most reliable method of preserving doctrine?

Most personal Protestant Pope's measure of their own truth is based on circular reasoning, and that's highly dangerous; that the Holy Spirit will guide them and therefore whatever conclusion that they come to was guided by the Holy Spirit.
Which Protestants' have a pope besides the RCC

Only interpretation of the bible are wrong...and there are many opinions of scripture.
If God gives one the gift of teaching, that person and all others with the gift could only teach Truth otherwise God would be the author of confusion. :eheh:

Where scripture needs to be ignored to uphold beliefs then I agree. Generally those are juxtapositioned however.

It's good that you have an ability to question this - self-reflection can be a good thing.

However, sola scriptura is not infallible, because it is a man-made dogma dating back only some 500 years.

The church is infallible.

No doubt

Again, Sola Scriptura wouldn't be infallible, just correct.

As for the Holy Spirit guiding us...the only answers I can think of are 1) the Holy Spirit isn't guiding us, the Holy Spirit is guiding Christianity as a whole (though I don't know that would bear up under examination), and 2) the Holy Spirit is guiding us, but we are following imperfectly.

So Jesus says that the gates of hell won't prevail against his church, he means that the gates of hell won't prevail against his church!

Isn't it nice how that balances out?
And notice it doesnt say that the Church is infallible.
My basketball team is made up of good guys.
West side is a bully team.
West side hurt some of our guys,
confused the refs.. and made a lot of points
But! They did not prevail !!

How do a bunch of people who disagree with each other on what Scripture is, whether Jesus is God or not, what we must do to be saved, what hell and heaven are -- in short, what the truth is -- glorify God?

So study it like He said to and learn how to "rightly divide" the word!
God's idea, not mine.

Chronic denial.

Does chronic here mean 'all the time'? ;)

When we pitch God's view by requiring one human interpretation above it, then we're not preserving doctrine. We're preserving human opinion.

If I may say, that describes any brand of solo/sola scriptura I know, but at least we have your analysis.
