Okay since I am not sure which forum is appropriate I selected this one. I am wondering what the most common questions were among us when we were new christians. Since this is the board for New Christians what are your big questions?
For me it was ...
How can God be three persons at once?
How can I trust that the Bible is truth?
How do I know when I hear God's voice and know that it is not mine own thoughts?

These were my biggest ones. I think most have been answered during my walk but I still struggle with the last. I wanted to open discussion on this topic and see what people had to say.

Hello Chrisinmi.

You posted - "How do I know when I hear God's voice and know that it is not mine own thoughts?"

God doesn't speak in our heads. He comes to us through the means He has chosen, His Word in the Bible and the sacraments of baptism and eucharist. You hear God where He wants to be heard, not in somebodys thoughts.

As a new Christian I began reading the New Testament and while reading the epistles one day I had to stop and go out. Yet God seemed to press the subject deeply on my mind and I kept thinking on the subject I was reading. When I got home to my surprise I discovered that the next passage I read, I had never read it before, was word for word exactly as I had thought it when out. This also taught me why the gospels of Matthew and Mark are so similar. It is not that portions of Mark were copied from Matthew but that the writers' thoughts were inspired by the same Spirit and one confirmed the other! Remember Jesus also said, 'My sheep hear my voice.' Then again in the book of Joel and elsewhere God tells us He speaks to us through His Son and also in dreams and visions...'

Blessings in the Beloved.

Sometimes you here God in your heart but I think sometimes it is hard to decipher whether he's speaking to you directly or if it is your own thoughts. Sometimes you just know it's him. Before my accident I heard a voice inside say, "you're about to get in a car accident but don't worry the angel's are with you." He also speaks to you through the bible, from what I learned. I remember I was upset one time and I cried and I didn't have any tissues so I wiped my tears in my pillow. I opened my bible, and this passage came out speaking about wiping my tears in my pillow. Then I knew God was around. When you're worried about stuff he'll speak to you and tell you what to do, but it's very faint. I remember I moved from Florida and all my stuff was there and I didn't know what to do with it. I couldn't afford to go back down there in and get it. I washing dishes wandering what to do and I heard a voice inside me telling me to donate it. So, I asked one of my friends to do it. I told him to take what he wants and donate the rest of the stuff. To this day I have more stuff now than what I had. Sometimes, a thought will continue to bother you until you actually listen to it I learned that sometimes God speaks to me in that way. He spoke to me before I even knew him. I remember this guy came up to me and I heard something inside of me tell to not date him. I didn't understand stuff like that and it turned out that guy was verbally abusive. Those are some examples of how I hear God when he speaks to me. It's something that you just know.

I think that question about the bible is what bothers me the most?

This never happened to me before I trusted Christ as my sinbearer. Now He usually speaks to me through His Word. I have even have times when a verse jumped out at me. Later events would prove the importance of that verse prophetically in my circumstances. (like living in the Hill Country)

Once in a great while I will be impressed by words - as though I could hear a paragraph in an instant. For example, when I finished studying Isaiah 60, the "voice" told me that the following verses (in Isaiah 61) would also apply to me. I immediately read the verses, and I could not remember reading them before. They talk about a ministry of evangelism to the poor, and encouraging hurting people. That is exactly what my ministry has become.

Before my husband was a Christian, he was driving along thinking about the possibility of God. He prayed, "God, show me if You are real." A voice came from the back seat, "Read the Bible." Wayne turned around to see who was in the back seat, but no one was there. Two weeks later, he trusted Christ to save him.

My guideline for such things - Is it Scriptural? If not, I take it with a grain of salt.

Aloha in Jesus

all of those questions bothered me as a new christian

mainly i think how can he be three things at once,
and the actual question that bothers me most that i feel nobody ever answers or knows the answers to is WHERE DID GOD COME FROM?
like, how did he arrive? do you know what i mean?

but all of those questions worry me

sometimes i think yes these people wrote the bible.... but how do you know that they were god talking and stuff,

but when i get these questions (which aren't rising like they used to) i tell myself it comes back to faith

but i would like to know how god came about ( :

How do you know if the Bible is true? The main way is the conviction of truth by the Holy Spirit; but doubts can throw a cloud over your mind. Let me just make a few points:
'Jonah was swallowed by a great fish...', is probably one of the hardest things in the Bible to believe. Yet there are two recorded accounts of fishermen being swallowed by a great fish. There is also a photograph of Japanese fishermen cutting open a giant fish and finding a dead but whole man inside. Jonah too died, if you read his prayer carefully, and he was therefore raised from the dead. For this reason Jesus regarded the event as a prophecy of His death, burial and ressurrection.

Consider this: There was a healing minister named Smith Wigglesworth, who in his lifetime raised seven people from the dead and some of these had death certificates written by doctors. If a man last century could do it by faith in Christ could not God do the same for Jonah and Jesus?

God as creator of the world- in six days: This is probably one of the chief objections to the Bible. Smith Wigglesworth often healed people with missing limbs. A new arm or eye would appear instantly and this too was witnessed by hundreds, including doctors and sceptics. The point is this, that the healings were acts of creation! The limbs in question appeared mature but were in fact brand new!

Scientifically, or rather rationalistically speaking a person with a new arm examined after such a healing would be declared to have two arms the same age as himself based on appearance... These healings and miracles have more than one purpose. Primarily they confirm the word of God in modern times to an unbelieving world! Scientists say the universe is billions of years old because it takes billions of light years for the light of stars to reach the earth, yet in the Bible God tells us He created stars to be seen and this implies that their light was created with them so we could see them. We would expect them to appear far older than they actually are. I quote this argument about starlight because it is the best one I've heard from evolutionists.

Where did God come from? God did not come from anywhere because He has always existed. God is not only infinite He is infinitely infinite! That is in the time it takes one thought to enter your mind God has thought of an infinite number things an infinite number of times. Do you really want to question Him? Who is more reliable; the God of infinite knowledge or foolish humans?

I was once struck down with food poisoning and almost fell into the street. The Holy Spirit quoted this word in my mind, 'If they drink poison it shall not harm them...' I had faith in the word of God and was instantaneously healed. We are healed by the Word as it is truth. Who can say they have been healed by doubts or by believing the 'wise' of this world?

Blessings to all, especially new believers.
Andrew.

God has spoken to me before in my head, like words. Sometimes I just KNOW it was God, sometimes he tells me it is him. Often it is VERY hard to know if i just imagined it. I like it when verses in the bible or lyrics of songs jump out at me.

The "trinity" meaning God being 3 persons at once is confusing to a lot of people.

Thinking of myself, I am a wife, mother and daughter. 3 distinct roles, yet the same person.

Each of those persons has a unique function, yet they agree together.

That's how I understand the 3-in 1 concept. Now what I don't understand, I have to take on faith, which means I'm willing to believe what I don't totally understand or can see. That is faith. I can't honestly say I totally "understand" how God can be 3 distinct persons, I just believe that HE IS. That's all I need to know! Hope this helps.

would love that question answered

thankyou!

God didn't come FROM anywhere. He IS and has always BEEN. That's why it is such a hard concept to understand. There is a good reason why FAITH is the only way to heaven. It is hard but think about all the things we put our faith in everyday. For example...we have faith that the sun will set daily and will rise again the next day don't we? We have faith that we will wake up the next morning. I heard another example on the radio yesterday. When a woman is pregnant with a child she has Faith that she will deliver that baby when the time is right. Hmmm...trying to think of more examples..but I am not a great on the spot person so I will pray about this today and come back when I have more.

God is way bigger than anything we can imagine or explain. There are many concepts that we as humans will never be able to figure out during our time on this earth. We have to just accept that at some point.

I have heard God in my thoughts. Once a scripture from the bible came into my head. I didn't know this scripture had never heard it and then two weeks later the Pastor at my church said the scripture!

Someone once said to me and this helps me heaps that you know if it is God if the thought does not go away. If you continue hearing a voice in your head to do something it is God. He will keep telling you something until you do it.

this may help you: the trinity in the Old testament:

Num 6:22 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying,
Num 6:23 Speak unto Aaron and unto his sons, saying, On this wise ye shall bless the children of Israel, saying unto them,
Num 6:24 The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:
Num 6:25 The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:
Num 6:26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
Num 6:27 And they shall put my name upon the children of Israel; and I will bless them.

the following is from the Gill commentary in e-sword
-----
Num 6:24 - The Lord bless thee,.... Jehovah, Father, Son, and Spirit; the word "Jehovah" being three times used, and a different accent put to each word, denoting three distinct persons and one Jehovah, according to Deu_6:4; who are each of them concerned in the blessing of the Lord's people, the spiritual Israel of God; Jehovah the Father blesses with all spiritual blessings, with electing, adopting, justifying, and pardoning grace, with regenerating and calling, and persevering grace, and with eternal life: Jehovah the Son blesses particularly with redeeming grace, and has a concern in all the other blessings; the saints are blessed with them in him, they are all in his hands, they are procured by him, come through him, and are the gifts of his grace: and Jehovah the Spirit blesses as a spirit of regeneration and sanctification, as the spirit of faith, as a comforter, as the spirit of adoption, and as the earnest and sealer of the saints unto the day of redemption:

and keep thee; from, the evil of the world, from the evil one Satan, from the evil of sin, and the power, prevalence, and dominion of it, and from falling totally and finally by it, and keep in a state of grace unto everlasting salvation.

Read this book, it is a splendid tool to help build faith within analytical minds

Donald Miller's "Blue Like Jazz" is another good reading selection <- I weeped 3-4 times while reading, I was touched so heavily by this book...

just suggestions...
I've known the Word to be true for a long time but I've been a stuborn jerk for a long time as well, (I guess that comes with the territory of being human ;) ) anyways...
these two books have helped put a spark in me...
I know God set things up so that the right people at the right time hooked me up with these books...

yeah, I know what you mean...I used to wonder when I was a child how God came into existence, but now I don't think of it much anymore. Its just a faith thing, you know, even though you dont see it, doesnt mean it isnt there.

The test of whether or not you are hearing God is in the Bible. Compare what you believe to be God's leading to God's Word. If they line up, it's God. If not, then it's not. This is what the Bereans did when Paul preached to them. Acts 17:11: "Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true."

The Bible also tells us to renew our minds in Christ. As your will is aligned to God's will, you will grow in discernment. Romans 12:2: "Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."

For me, I think the biggest thing was (and still is) the whole evolution/creation thing. At this point, I'm just putting faith in God and asking Him to explain it to me when I get to heaven.

God communicates with us in many ways. Through other people, through events that occur, and yes, he does speak to us.

It's important to realize that prayer is not only a time to speak to God, but to listen. Its like .. I call you up on the phone, talk to your for a whole 20 minutes straight without you getting but a word in, then quickly say goodbye and hangup. You didn't have anytime to say a word to me eh? Well God feels the same way. He wants to speak to you. God is always calling us, but we must open our hearts, and minds and take time to listen. Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Take time to listen, to focus on God. It may be difficult at first, but the more you pray, the more you listen, the more you build your faith, you will be able to distinguish, and know what God's voice sounds like.

Hope that helped a bit. :)
