This isn't one, but many of the Mormon social projects started in 1985,
No, our large welfare program began back in 1929 with the great depression. Harold B. Lee began it in his own stake and then it became the model for the whole church. Welfare Square was built in 1938 and remolded in the 1990s.
We've always had fast Sundays where we each skip two meals and the money not spent is donated to the church to help pay light bills, rent and doctor bills of those living in the ward.
During WW2 the Saints in Norway and other places planted potatoes and then at the end of the war they shipped them to Germany to feed the starving German people. General Eisenhower about fell off his chair.
We've been helping each other and others since the Church began.
Eisenhower didn't become President until after the Marshall Plan was instituted. Christians have always helped other people. Are you tooting your own horn as if Mormons have more compassion than other people?
