Morals are based essentially on one thing: our past. We may have the freedom to think through which values our morals stem from, but ultimately the starting point is what affects the greatest where we are today.
Where people typically get their notion of morals is from the past, but morals are actually all about the future and always have been.

A moral is a rule to never be broken so as to accomplish something. That something might be varied from one belief to another. Heaven is the typical goal of the Christian. The morals are about how to accomplish that Heaven. This is why faith comes into the picture.

Keep faith that your morals (if held) will in fact accomplish your goal.

As a Christian I generally try to keep the 6 commandments that Jesus gave us. Plus a few of my own. Many who are not Christian will do this unrealising because they were brought up in a Christian background.
What, if anything, do you base your morals on?

This is not a question I'm trying to catch you out with, just curious.

Reason.

Namaste rebel_conservative,

thank you for the post.

These come from the seven laws that G-d gave to Noah:

1. Avodah zarah - Do not worship false gods

check

2. Shefichat damim - Do not murder

check.

3. Gezel - Do not steal

check.

4. Gilui arayot - Do not be sexually immoral

check.

5. Birkat Hashem - Do not blaspheme

check. though perhaps this may mean something other than the plain meaning.

6. Ever min ha-chai - Do not be cruel to animals

check.

7. Dinim - Set up a system of law

check.

well.. going by the Noahchide laws i'm having no worries with regards to the Christian tradition.

these are binding upon all gentiles and remain binding today, with the primacy of the two most important rules - love G-d with all your heart and love your neighbour as yourself.

oh.. i didn't see those listed in the Noahchide laws.

well, i don't love any deity however, my view is that all sentient beings are equal and, as such, i have great compassion for my neighbor. in fact, one of them is coming over today to help do some electrical wiring in my humble home.

other than the loving god part, it seems that i'm doing ok by these standards :)

for the most part, these are mirroring the Buddhist Lay Precepts which lay Buddhists adhere to.

metta,

I bet you can't logically support that.
Why don't you think he can support it logically? How bout you try and reason your way to a moral stance (pick one or a set of basic morals) just to see where you break down (or surprisingly succeed). It would be interesting before Azimov takes a whack at it.
