it might have been at the beginning, but their is some other weirdness there. you are right that they are atypical and unrepresentative of monasticism. I think they had a TV show or something for a bit too.
Ah, I had hoped maybe it improved. I looked at their website some time back (maybe a few years now) and didn't see anything that stood out badly, so I had hoped ...

the whole companions thing for monasticism is an oxymoron, and they have Roman Catholic saints with halos on their walls, as well as non-glorified Orthodox (like Fr Schmemann and Patriarch Athenagoras).

well, from what I have learned icons should not actually go up until the glorification of the saint. so someone like Fr. Schmemann is not so bad because I know some folk who venerate him, even though I don't think that is correct. but Francis of Assisi?

just saying it looks odd, not saying they are in any theological error per say, just that it looks weird. I would say the same for a male monastic in a female monastic habit.

I mean I'm really not quite sure what you're referring to - the major difference in the habit is the veil. I've just now looked at pictures and they simply seem not to wear monastic headgear.

I think, having not seen them, that the only problem would be in women dressing like men, or vice-versa. You (general, plural"you") can't make yourself St Xenia of Petersburg, or use her exceptional story to justify what has been generally declared to be wrong.

I think there are differences between the habits, they are not glaring, but they are there. aside from the headgear, I don't think a female habit is just a cassock fitted for a woman.

and again, just off looking to me.

If you put the apostolnik etc on 'em, do you think you could tell the difference?

well, seeing as how there is a nun who often comes here, and I am an hour away from a Greek woman's monastery, simply looking at the cassock, I think yes. now, I have not seen all types of female cassocks, but I don't think I have seen one that can be cinched around the waist. and I am pretty sure the sleeves differ when it comes to the buttons on the cuffs.
