  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hey everybody!

This may be a dumb question with an easy solution, but I have never had this happen before.
I access the Web with a dial-up connection - 56k modem. My actual speed is uaully around 48k - 50k.
However, we just moved, and since I have begun accessing the Web from our new home, my modem doesn't go faster than 24k. It's maddening!

I don't recall changing any settings, and from what I know, I don't think the actual phone line would have any impact on modem speed. I haven't changed providers or anything. I am accessing from a new phone number.

Any ideas for what may be causing this vexing problem?

your internet speed is dependent upon how much cable and how many connections there are before your signal actually reaches the phone company.... this is also true with cable. like if you live in a real densely populated area there are going to be thousands of phones and other internet users using the same basic wiring..... now in the case at your old place you were lucky to get the speed that you did cause most people (at best) get the speed that you have now. i don't know how much you pay for your ISP (internet service provider) but roadrunner is like 30 bucks a month in some areas.... and 100 times faster. i pay a bundle fee for internet and basic cable for 60 bucks........ if you are running a separate line for dial-up and paying an ISP then you are probably racking up around 30 bucks anyway....... so i would consider switching if you can.......... here is one of the cheaper cable companies that offer roadrunner ... http://www1.wowway.com

Someone in another forum just recently had this problem.....If you can't do cable or don't want to, try replacing all the phone lines up to the box outside of your house because they may be old.....but make sure to take out the "test plug" so you don't shock yourself.....It's really expensive to have the phone company do that unless your lines inside are covered and even then they won't change them unless the phone is staticy and crackles, they have no responsibility when it comes to internet connections and their lines.....so unless a new line solves the problem then u'r stuck with a slow connection......

Yup...Everything from the jacks that you plug into to the wires that run through the walls to the main connection box outside......Some people just attach the new phone wires to the baseboard, but down there it takes a beating......Not sure how to tell you to run new wires, it all depends on if you have a basement or not.......If you have a basement in an older house you sometimes can run the wire up through the walls.......It's easy to do, it just takes patience.....My uncle has a house that is 175 years old, it was an old amish house that has been renovated several times in the past 50 years or so, but he ran the phone lines into the basement and then across the floor joists to where he wanted the phone jacks and then just drilled a hole down through close to the wall and put surface jacks in......as for the upstairs there was an opening in the basement that went the whole way to the second floor that had electrical lines and water lines and he just ran the wire up through there and drilled a 2" hole in the wall to find the wire and then he put a faceplate jack over the hole........I'm just throwing some ideas out on how to run the wires, wire isn't to expensive, I've gone to a place called "Radio Shack" and gotten 100ft of wire for $15us.......you might be able to get it cheeper from somewhere like Home Depot or Lowes.....make sure that the part going from the outside box into the basement is outdoor wire and right inside you can setup a splitter to go the rest of the way with indoor wire........or you can just run the outdoor wire the whole way....outdoor wire might last you longer though, but it all depends on the price......

My modem did that before, it had the wrong drivers and it burned it out because it was trying to over clock......

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh. would that be the reason why lately if the pc has been on for some time it starts to make noises and vibrate adn i end up having to turn up the fan speed to coll things down?
That's probably just that there isn't enough air flow.....If you have your computer in a place where there isn't much air flow behind it it will cause it to hold all that heat back there which is bad....As for the modem, I can't remember why, but mine was detecting as the regular modem, but it was channeling through the sound card for some reason and when anything was setup to dial up it was going through I believe Wave Device for Modem or something like that and it was reading me being connected at 76k.......the modem lasted 2 weeks like that before it just wouldn't work.....so when it happened again, I was quite mad so I deleted all the drivers out and when it reloaded them it loaded them right and I didn't have any more problems.....the software/driver problem came out of the manufacturer like that so they replaced the modem both times and it wasn't until after the second one burned out that they realized what was going on and then resolved the problem....
