Who plays MMORPG's? And what 1(or more) do you play?

I recently just stopped playing Dark Age of Camelot and Lineage 2 and Astonia 3. I wont ever play WoW because of personal choice. My friends tell me CoH/CoV is a great game but I haven't gotten around to trying it yet.

I've played DAoC for years and know that game like the back of my hand. My uncle had a guild called the Knights of Trinity on the server Percival but they all moved to WoW and my uncle refused to lol. I only played Lineage private servers and Astonia 3 i have a level 46 Arch-Mage. I've also tried my hand at Knight Online but once they deleted everything I stopped playing that, I had a level 35 mage toon there.
Played many others but as for retail, I'm mostly known for playing DAoC.

I’ve played maybe 35 different mmog’s since the release of UO (not counting MUD‘s). Some on pay subscription, some free and a few trials. Right now I’m mostly playing Anarchy Online, PlanetSide and Lord of the Rings Online. I spend most of my time developing my own mmorpg, I’ve been working on it for a couple years officially though spent time working on the concept work for it a couple years before that as I was looking for an engine to handle it while learning how to do it. You can see some old alpha & pre-alphaish screenshots on the MyCF Link page though I am upgrading the rendering engine currently so it will look better soon enough. Anyway, beyond what I’m playing right now or working on, I’m looking forward to Star Trek Online and Pirates of the Burning Sea, among others especially from the independent community.

I've seen <KoT> running around on Percival on the rare occasions that I play. I played EQ pretty hard core for a couple of years then tinkered with DAoC off and on. I tried CoH, Anarchy Online, Earth and Beyond as well as a lot of the others but never really got into any of them. I might pick up Vanguard soon.

EVE is a beautiful, beautiful game. I've never seen anything so deliciously cutthroat and unforgiving come out of the online gaming world.

Frontline Soldier, you really ought to at least give WoW a shot. It's popular for a very good reason.

i never liked wow. It isnt complex enough for me.

Played Final Fantasy XI for a while, but left because RMT (real money trade) ruined the economy. Great game, but it got to a point where level 20 gear cost what endgame gear was worth when I first started. Now I'm on WoW and I'm enjoying it. I've been following the series since Wacraft II, so WoW seemed like a natural choice.

Bought Guild Wars a few days ago, and so far I'm not impressed. Maybe I'm not deep enough into the game to really appreciate it, I dunno. All I've seen so far is a bunch of kids shouting vulgar insults and other such things they shouldn't be saying and a world devoid of any real "feel" to it. Just seems so generic. Final Fantasy XI had character to it. WoW has character to it. I don't feel that with Guild Wars.

And that's all I have to say about that.

I used to play GuildWars when it was good (about 2 years ago)...and I left because I was so disgusted with the vulgarity and the lack of any attempt by people to r/p . After reporting people numerous times I discovered that, suprisingly, the designers of the game seem to have no problem with such; If I had kids I certainly wouldn't be happy with them playing GW.
A shame really because the game itself has potential.

Well yeah, GW wasn’t a real mmorpg, it was an instanced game (not a world) much like Diable or some such game as that. I find it very hard to RP (really RP) in an instanced game and many people/kids there are just there to pwn not RP. I mean lets face it, the majority of RPers are drawn to online worlds, especially us oldschool p&p gamers, not online multiplayer pvp games which is what GW basically is. Btw, like the avatar, B5 is one of the best sci-fi’s ever made :)

gameplay realy, i found it to be a press buttons in a sequance to win game.

you know...WoW has a large amount of strategy too it. Especially in the 40 man raids where a mistake could possible kill you and 39 of your friends who are with you. :)

Eve strategy..... oh man

If you loose your ship thats it.... gone , you can get some money from insurgence (if you bothered with it), but you loose all your weapons and modules..... which are worth more than the ship a lot of the times

Also you can die, as in die, if you dont have a clone...... people loose months/years of skills training like that, thats what makes the game unique, is its so realistic, there are actual losses, and when you go into battle, you are actually nervous...... because months of work are on the line...

Heh you can almost make a living insuring and destroying your ship at lower levels. When I played, I always insured, the only time I really lost any money was when I outgrew a ship and could not transfer the insurance to the new hull. The game is not bad, but I seemed to be a bug magnet, many of the missions kept breaking for some reason and that was very irritating needing to delete the mission and loosing points with the npc I got the mission from.

Game looks great though, but if you saw one solar system you seen them all; they nearly all look the same and there aren’t really a lot of different scenery models in the game. For an indie company, it is an excellent game they made, I definitely give then that benefit of the doubt on that, I mean for not having like EA or SOE funding the development, they really did well for sure. Now they have little overhead and are making a bundle and buying other companies like white wolf inc.

Iv'e played Demos of EQ2 and StarWars Galaxies, and I might sign on with them sometime. StarWars Galaxies seems to have a lot of things "wrong" with it somehow though.

Why has no-one ever made a Bab5 MMORPG eh? hehe

If there was a KOTOR multiplayer game however.....I don't think I'd ever play anything else.

As for GW, I doubt I'll ever go back to it.

Hah someone asked in a thread recently (other site) what existing video games would you like to be seen made into an mmorpg, and my first answer was KOTOR Online (not by SOE) :D

I played SWG for about two years up until the NGE was released, haven't been back and have no plans to return unless they remove the NGE. I just can't play it like that, they turned it into a point and shoot game like an FPS. I had a master bounty hunter that was getting killed by low level bug creatures that would zip around and be impossible to blast... and I wasn't even hunting them but trying to fight my mark. A lot of other reasons too but bleh...

Yeah, no B5 mmog to speak of. Sierra had rights to make B5 but shut it down along with the LOTR project as well. Though LOTR was an mmorpg I don't think B5 was... but should have been. LOTR of course was picked up again by another company, thankfully. Well I think thankfully, VU games did own AC2 which they shut down rather than fix... but such as the plight of mmorpg sequels I guess. Anything else to play? Star Trek Online of course :D B5 story was better but ST is a well developed universe which makes it great and perfect for an mmorpg. Same as like with LOTRO you know, the world extends beyond a few books and after all successful mmorpg's are not simply games but worlds. I guess that is why it is so hard to fathom how SOE/LA blew it so hard with SWG… they tried to make it into a game, not a world or universe.

Oh and you mentioned EQ2, yeah I played that. I had the SOE all access subscription for some time so played all the SOE games except for Matrix. I don’t play it anymore though, I just don’t like the magic in it, it makes me feel uncomfortable in light of such things as Deut ch.18. It’s somewhat of a messy business that stuff is. I guess that is why I feel a little better about playing LOTRO since there are no mages, warlocks or such classes tapping into general conventions that the occult recognizes such as divination and other such things that are in games like EQ2. I feel sorry for the unsaved that are just so lost in that, and the environment tends to draw in Wiccan’s and such to recruit people into their religion since they are already playing through the motions. I’ve seen that happen first hand, I knew some that were doing that in EQ. So I just try to stay away form it and stick to the alternatives like PlanetSide, AnarchyOnline and other such games.
