The fight against racial discrimination, against the sin of racism, is a very good one; and this is a fight Martin Luther King fought.

However, the legacy of this fight includes also questionable things, such as forced integration, anti-discrimination laws which infringe people's private property rights, and finally, affirmative action.

Today, people often bring his name up to push forward an egalitarian and opressive agenda which ultimately endangers the very existence human society. Still, there was something good in his struggle: the realization that all people, independent of ethnicity, are worthy of love and respect for having been created in the image of God. And it is because of this good principle, as opposed to the legislation and actions often assumed to follow from it, that the remembrance of Martin Luther King is a positive thing.

I deal with the public everyday. I can assure you there is no shortage of racism from all races.

You've reminded me of something that happened Friday. We have a good number of elderly black clients (Black. Not African-American. If you say African-American they look at you like you've got your head on backwards. *Shrug* Whatever the client wants....)

Anyway, a good number of them refuse to work with our black loan officers. They specifically ask to speak to a white person. Weirds me the heck out, but again, whatever the client wants.

If they wanted to talk to purple people we'd be pulling out the body paint. It's just interesting how it works out though.


As far as MLK Day goes.... I don't mind the guy having his own holiday, but I think it is very telling that it is the only named Federal holiday, and that all others have had the names removed. If MLK is going to have a named day I want George Washington's birthday back. It's only fair.

Interesting point. We used to have Washington's Birthday, Lincoln's Birthday and Columbus Day. Maybe it would be more appropriate, as someone suggested earlier, to rename MLK day to somehting generic like Civil Rights Day or Desegregation Day.
