There may not be much we can do, except call it out when we see it. (Though you must prepared to be attacked by those who agree with the slander.) From a spiritual standpoint we are best served by prayer and faith.

It was tried once before in the US, during the John Adams administration. The fear was a French Terror style revolt in the US, and that led to a series of laws known as the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798. Anyone accused of sedition was subject to arrest, conviction, fine, and/or imprisonment. What was considered sedition, though depended on who said it and who it was about. You could call the party of then vice-president Thomas Jefferson a bunch of terrorists all day long and not worry about arrest. Say one word against Adams and his party, though, and you could be arrested. That happened, one of them the grandson of Benjamin Franklin. Another was a garbage scow captain by the name of Luther Baldwin, who was arrested, fined, and convicted over a drunken joke. Fortunately, the worst of the laws had a sunset provision, and when Jefferson became president, he pardoned those still imprisoned under the Alien and Sedition Acts.

That's the problem with "misinformation" laws. Who determines what is misinformation? There is no reason to think what didn't work in John Adams' time would work in ours.
