  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

well maybe if you read it you might know what they teach instead of presumming what they teach and maybe just maybe when someone post's in an online chat forum that they are not the official word of their particular Church and are just posting their own thoughts and opinons. How crazy would that be?

I presume nothing. I call out what looks like nonsense to me. Is a straight answer too much to ask for?

"Deep within his conscience man discovers a law which he has not laid upon himself but which he must obey. Its voice, ever calling him to love and to do what is good and to avoid evil, sounds in his heart at the right moment.... For man has in his heart a law inscribed by God.... His conscience is man's most secret core and his sanctuary. There he is alone with God whose voice echoes in his depths."[47]

I truly can't stomach reading much of this sort of thing, but to me it sounds like RC does NOT teach that "conscience is an act of our intellect," which is the statement I objected to. So you have a strange way of telling me you agree with me!

Why not just stick with Scripture?

Jer 31:33 But this [shall be] the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people."

Romans 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness"

This isn't good enough? You're seriously going to stand by any statement like that? I see 0 value in what you posted, over and above even these tiniest snippets of Scripture on the subject. It'd be one thing if Scripture were silent on the matter, but it's not ... neither do I see any "2 ways of reading this."

No, they don't.

This is a silly response. Every bit as silly as when you compare all Pr's to the bad experience you had in one Church. That word "they" can become awfully tribal!

Much better just to point out the over-generalization, and correct the post you were responding to, reflecting that he was referring to individuals. Individuals that represent a teeny fraction of 1% of the whole he was commenting on.

Pope John Paul II had a rather different view of charismatics. He was fully supportive of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal. I suspect that many of the saints of the Church would also take a rather different view of the gifts of the Spirit.

I have nothing against the gifts of the Holy Ghost (how could I?) -- either the ordinary gifts or the extraordinary gifts. I just have a serious problem with the what Charismatics (Protestants or [pseudo-]Catholics) claim is the gift of speaking in tongues (and some other issues). There are saints who had the gift of speaking in tongues -- but they did not babble nonsense.

Contrary to popular belief, Catholics are not subject to the personal whims and opinions of the current pope. Just because Pope John Paul II and, to a lesser degree, Pope Benedict XVI, have recognized the Charismatic Catholic Movement doesn't necessarily legitimize it.

Obviously, this movement of the Holy Spirit is not limited to Catholics. The Renewal of the 70's included Catholics, Anglicans, Presbyterians and many others. There many programs today that emphasize evangelism and releasing the gifts of the SPirit. These programs exist in Catholic churches, in Catholic prayer groups as well as in those of other denomination.

I should highlight the part of about the 1970s.

Make some felt banners, sing Kumbayah, and "release the gifts of the Spirit" -- I'm glad the 70s are over.

Well, why not use the term "heresy" instead?

If you are referring to a group who you believe has an incorrect belief on an essential issue, you should refer to them as a "heresy" to be more clear, "cult" already has several accepted meanings.

Ok, so here's another misconception RC's have about Pr's:

that we're about to suddenly accept RC terminology! ^_^ I woulda never thought I'd actually see that one in print either ^_^

Why not use the term heresy? Because it refers to Faithful and devout believers that were TORTURED, MAIMED and KILLED by YOUR Church.

I hope that's clear enough for you? Please, let's not go there again, ok? Inserting boiling lead into a person's veins never had ANY power to purge from sin. I see no other reason to use the word heresy other than to conjure up such heinous images.

But wouldn't that be the same problem a Catholic would have with a Baptist teaching their children about Jesus? They don't believe the same things about Jesus as we do,

You a funny girl. Baptists teach He became a werewolf on the full moon? If you could for a minute ditch the schismatic things you've been taught and recognize the truth of the matter, you'd see ... wait, that's the point of this whole thread, isn't it?

Why not just spell out your perceptions of what horrible things Baptists teach about who Jesus is?

Many parents at my parish, and other traditional Catholic parishes, for that reason especially don't even send their children to Catholic schools -- most have become so liberal they are no longer trustworthy educators

 Don't look now but you just agreed with a Pr. (Then again my kids were homeschooled, and I do everything in my own business)

what exactly can't you stomach/ the fact that this is what the Catholic Church actually teaches about conscience and you can't stomach the fact you "gasp'.... you may agree?

Now i don't know what type of personally issues you may have had with the Catholic Church, but it seems to me everything and anything to do with the Catholic Church seem bring upon rage and knee jerk reactions to automatically disagree .

i mean what part of 'For man has in his heart a law inscribed by God.... " can't you stomach?

something tells me if this was written by an Evangelical or even an EO you would have responded with an :amen::clap:

:D This is GREAT :D Ya gotta clue me in on beating the Spirit into you with a jacket though?

There's a couple seriously scary things in this one post:

Doesn't your version of the Holy Spirit involve blowing on people and knocking them down and babbling nonsense? That doesn't mean I deny any about the Holy Spirit just because I reject your false conception of Him.

Wow, could you exemplify the need for this thread's existence any better?

Baptism saves. if someone gets baptized and then gets hit by a car leaving the church, they will go straight to Heaven.

Notice the heart condition is irrelevant, the action is all that matters

ohh that's right because Protestant's never maimed, burned, hunged, tortured or killed who they considered heretics, now did they? Nooo

but yet we never see you fly off the handle at Baptist, who let's see not all that long ago hung up blacks, used the bible to distort the views on slavery and racial issues, but then head off to Church and sing his Glory, come back and beat them up some blacks.

Where is your oversized bolded text with them?

what a joke!!!!

Well here's another misconception about Pr's. What are we up to now, about 49?

sunlover1's mother may not have explained the reasons clearly but she did the right thing in forbidding her from attend a Baptist VBS.

Still looking for where Baptists teach Jesus ate His young, or whatever it is you object to that they say about HIM.

They did?!?

I thought only Catholics did that.

I guess I had a misconception about protestants.

"There are people in the Church who are sinners, therefore the Church can teach things which are false." I don't see the logic here.

Ok, how many are we up to now? The misconception on display here, is that Pr's don't see the logic here either.
