  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

We here so much about "Protestant misconceptions". How about some misconceptions about Protestants? I'll go first.

We were discussing dueterocanical (sp?) books today in religion and my teacher was explaining that Protestants reject them or put them in the apocrypha. *girl raises hand* "Don't they take out verses in the New Testament too? Like where Jesus talks about the bread of life?" ME= FACEPALM  Fortunately he corrected her, but still.

Who else has heard some crazy things about us Protestants?

LOL
Well, I was taught that protestants were very bad. My mom wouldn't even
allow me to go to the neighborhood VBS's in the summer time. But I'm sure
it's because that's what she was taught herself...

Misconception is that "protestants are their own popes"

A catholic nun asks her class of young students what they want to be when they grow up. One particular girl raises her hand. The nun calls on her and the girl says, "When I grow up I want to be a prostitute." "WHAT did you just say?", replies the nun, in absolute shock from what she just heard. The girl, afraid she just said something wrong, hesitantly responds with, "I... I want to be a prostitute...?..." The nun, relieved, and with a light laugh says, "O, thank God! I thought you said you wanted to be a PROTESTANT."

Well, would you let your children go to some Mormon church event or a Muslim school? Of course not. Why would you want your children to be taught things contrary to what you are trying to teach them? There are Catholic Vacation Bible Schools if you want your kids to participate in that sort of thing.

Misconception is that "protestants are their own popes"

This is not to say that the Pope has a dictatorial authority over the Catholic Church really but more as that Protestants don't hold any sort of obedience to anyone but themselves with regards to any teach on faith, morals or any other practice. Nobody in a Protestant hierarchy of any particular denomination really claims any authority, it's just for administration purposes.

Judges 17:6 said:
In those days there was no king in Israel, but every one did that which seemed right to himself.

I've always been curious as to what that accusation meant exactly. It never seemed to make sense to me, considering the many protestant denominations that don't even have ordained clergy.
I know.. that's why i chose that one .. plus... can you think of any?

probably a true story :D

Shame on you for equating baptist church with a cult.
Check a cult website sometime, you might be in for a shocker.
My mom, and she was my hero , and the best person in the world, was wrong!
She KEPT me from learning about God.
No offence to your denom, but i attended ccd for years and .. it didn't cut it.

Does "obediance to myself" mean I'm conscientious or selfish?
I'll obey me if I'm not just ordering me around to assert my authority over me, but if I tell myself to do something against my conscience, I'll politely tell myself where to get off & I might even give myself a warning not to try something like that again or I'll be someone I'd not like to meet in a dark alley.

Protestants have no central definition of Sola Scriptura to which they can all adhere.

We're all popes so we're all our own centers infallibly defined if not under developement, all with unchanging consistency & without error lest hell prevail.

They weren't able to define when Roman Catholicism began either IIRC.

Hi sun. Would a baptist mother be wrong if they did not allow their child to go to aCatholic VBS?
I know an evangelical family who told their son they would not help pay for college if he went Boston College a Cathlic school
