  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Have you heard Gavin Bryars? His most famous work is perhaps "Jesus Blood Never Failed Me Yet", which is based on a looped recording of a homeless guy he found singing the song on a London street. The story and an audio excerpt is availalble at:

I haven't heard a lot of Bryars' work, but little bits here and there. I'll look around for the piece you describe and any others...

Wow, 11 identical posts in a row! Not quite what I was expecting, but since the thread is about minimalism I guess it kinda fits... :p
What's the hurry to get 50 posts?

I think I've got a CD by Bryars...yes, "A Man in a Room, Gambling." I got it in a bargain bin, or free somewhere, I think, and I'm embarrassed to say I haven't really listened to it. If I remember correctly, I listened to the beginning, and realized that it would really command a lot of focus, so I decided to listen to it later. Maybe it's time to actually do so.

Whether or not Philip Glass is overrated is not for me to say; I am not ashamed to say I love how his work fits so nicely in Koyanisquaatsi and Kundun and other films. Outside of that, I'm not really familiar, nor do I have much to compare him to. So I like him so far! :)

I checked out City Life by Reich. I really like it. Nobody in my family can stand it. But I really like the mixture of instruments and regular recordings of noises. I really like the "tune".

I also discuvered two exceptionally nice pieces by Arvo Part: ...Which Was the Son of ... (2000) Luke 3: 23-38 set to music, and I Am the True Vine (1996) John 15: 1-14 set to music. The latter is ideal for meditation.

What's the name of the album(s) containing those Part pieces?

I love Philip Glass' works! His Naroquatsi (I hope I spelt it right) is really good. I especcially love the piece called Religion.

I like that one too. I especially like the first track, Naqoyqatsi. Those vocals are so erie.

I also like his Solo Piano CD. I know it was used on a soundtrack in some movie, but I can't place the name of the movie for the life of me.

I love that work; I had to hold back tears when we listened to it in class a few years ago.

Other than that, minimalism is kind of blah to me; too much eastern mystic influence.

How do you see the eastern mystic influence expressed in minimalism?

A lot of it is based on chanting, and often trance music falls into the category of minimalism. Also, most of those composers are New Age or Buddhist -- for example, Philip Glass's latest symphony (No. 5 'Requiem') was performed at my school last year. In the work, texts from the Bible, the Koran, the Mayan Popul Vuh, a Japanese Noh play, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, Zuni and African myths, the Bhagavad Gita and the Buddhist saint Shantideva are spun together to form one "univeral message of truth."
