  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Dear Diane,

Please, there is no reason to get defensive and start hitting people over the
head with your diploma. Many of us here at Foru.ms also have various
Theological Degrees and are ordained ministers and pastors.
Most of us here in your thread were interested in your Word study.

Most of us in this thread also know by the Spirit of God where Jesus was coming
from when He turned over the money changers' tables and when He rebuked the
pharisees and other religious leaders, also when He rebuked His own disciples.
We also know where Moses was coming from when He displayed righteous anger.

No one is arguing with you. We are trying to learn where the information you are
sharing with us and the definition you shared with us came from.

You are the one who brought up the word "aramaic" in your definition
of the word "meekness".

You said:

"Meekness, in the aramaic.the greek.english....is the word PRATOS..."

To call people potentially dangerous because they looked the word up in Strong's,
I believe is a little overboard.

The Greek Lexicon actually says it is the same thing that Strong's does and the word
they have there is PRAOTES.

The Definition the Lexicon gives is
"
gentleness, mildness, meekness"

Again, all we are asking for is where you got the information. We are asking for you
to expound on the topic that's all.

So, will you do that for us please?

Thank you in advance

God bless

wow, first of all Jesus , did not speak aramaic, it is a written language and the NT scriptures were written by the apostles, so that should take care of that issue.

secondlyI gave you the translation of the word using all the pretenses and the rest of the sentence. You can be come dangerous if you rely on the strongs for each word, when in use of language the meaning changes with pre and post tense words which I stated.

Thirdly, I never stated that it wasnot power undercontrol, because that is what it is, but it is in no way mild. Other wise you negate most of scripture as Jesus was stated as being the meekess....and he was very holy in the things he said and did, which included an awfull lot of rebuking......

so please read and consult the Holy Sprit before you jump on these self understood replys.....and if you recall I already stated that all of you had a partial understanding of the truth in this area......

oh yeah, I should not forget to tell you I am a Pastor with a Masters in Theology.....also I can't type worth a darn and I forget to use spell check.....so bear with me!!!!!

I'm not sure if you're responding to a specific post or to everyone.

My post on Aramaic was a response to the posts just before which brought up the question of whether or not Jesus spoke Aramaic.

It is a pretty well known historical fact that the common language of the whole region from Syria on down to Arabia was Aramaic. Aramaic was the tongue of the common people in that region.

This goes back actually to the time of the Assyrian and Babylonian empires. Aramaic and Hebrew are very closely related, cognate languages. In other words they derived from a common source. During the first babylonian empire Aramaic became the language of government and diplomacy for the entire middle east. The result was that eventually it became the common spoken tongue in which all people from different regions communicated with each other.

When Abraham left Ur, he went to an area populated by people called Arameans, and the bible lists this people as part of the ancestry of the nation of Israel. Aramaic is the language of the Arameans.
When Abraham and his kin moved further south and west and settled in Canaan, the languages of the two people groups developed separately, and thus Hebrew became distinct from Aramaic.

Hebrew was the spoken language of Israel until the Babylonian captivity. During the Babylonian captivity the Jewish people began to speak Aramaic because it was the court language and the trade language of Babylon where they lived.
This can be witnessed in the fact that the book of Daniel is written partially in Hebrew, and Partially in Aramaic.

The Hebrew language was still used, and particularly so in terms of literature and religious scholarship. However, during their years of captivity, the land of Judah and Israel was settled by non-Jewish people brought in to supplant the exiles.
This is actually why the Samarians were so despised by the Jews. The Samarians were the descendants of Jews who intermarried with the non-Jewish people. These people all spoke Aramaic.

The result was that Hebrew and Aramaic co-existed after the return of the Jews from exile. Hebrew was used for literature and study, but more and more the common every day language was Aramaic.
By the time of Christ it is fairly certain that most of the people in the region spoke Aramaic as their first language. When the Jews were scattered by the Romans after the Bar-Kochba revolt, the Hebrew language was relegated to a role similar to Latin today.

In addition to that, Alexander the great conquered pretty much the entire middle east just before 300 BC, and his successors maintained kingdoms over the whole region that were dominated by Greek culture. This era is known to History as the Helenistic period. Heles is what Greeks call themselves. The result was that pretty much everyone who had to travel, or who participated in commerce, or had any education at all, spoke Greek.

This is why the NT scriptures were all written in Greek. Even most of the Jews who lived outside of Israel communicated in Greek, which is why the septuagint Greek translation of the OT was widely used even among Jews.

The New Testament books were written in Greek because they were intended to be circulated among churches outside of Israel and even the Jews outside of Israel all spoke Greek.
Often times when the Gospels quote Jesus, they quote him as speaking Aramaic, including even some of the names used. For example Cephas, Peter's name is a greek transliteration of the Aramaic Kepha.
