Medieval Times Add-on Story!!!

Sure, there can be an adventure. Never thought of that. It's a great idea! Let me think of something. OH! I just got something. All our characters meet, at the ball, or at the tournaments, wherever. Then, a few go missing and the rest set out trying to find them. Sound good?

Diamond wandered through the streets, carelessly looking at items that were presented in shop windows. She wasn't interested in what the shops held, she was thinking about Jack and William. It had been two days since William interrupted her serene life. She stayed on the streets more often then going home. She couldn't keep her mask up long enough to endure the night. She returned home long after the sun had set and rose again, leaving as the sun appeared in the east.

Diamond paused in front of a shop of mirrors looking at her reflextion. Light brown hair framed her face as she looked back at the girl everyone saw and didn't care for. She grimaced putting a hand to her cheek. A bruise was beginning to show were someone has struck her the other day. Tears welled in her eyes and she turned away from the morror willing the tears back. She started her way along the streets heading towards the river.

Alex followed her through the streets. Fern frowned to herself thoughtfully. She glanced back and saw Alex look away quickly. Fern stopped and Alex stopped beside her looking down. She searched his face briefly then smiled shaking her head slightly, starting to walk again. Alex blinked, "What was that for?"

Fern shrugged, "Just looking at you."

Alex frowned, "But why?"

Fern giggled, "You were looking me over, so why not look you over?"

Alex's face reddened, "My apologies."

Fern simply smiled as she walked saying nothing. Alex walked beside her, uneasy with her silence, "What type of merchant is your father?"

Fern stopped looking around for a familiar landmark before looking up at Alex again, "He sells cloth and other things."

"What kind of cloth?"

Fern grinned folding her arms, "Never thought a guy would be interested in cloth. Silks and cotton mostly. Sometimes wool but that depends on the season."

Alex looked down over her again noticing that she wore a simple brown dress of cotton. He looked back into her brown eyes. Fern's mouth tipped up slightly, amusement in her dark eyes. Suddenly, someone pushed into her and she stumbled back. The man uttered a curse, "Watch it, girl."

Alex caught her arms preventing her fall glaring after the man.

"You okay?" Alex asked.
"Yes, I'm fine" Fern said, brushing off her dress.
"You look great" Alex said, kind of blushing.
She blushed some too and said, "Thank you."
"Be right back" Alex said.
"Hey! Wait, your not running again are you?" Fern shouted.

Alex darted threw the crowd, then he saw it.

Fern looked up as Alex walked slowly threw the crowd looking like he wanted to turn around.

'I am going to do this...' Alex told him self, 'I am going to do this...'

He walked right up to Fern and handed her a bunch of roses.
And asked her, "Umm, Fern... Would you... Would you go to the ball with me?"

Fern gasped, blinking up at Alex. He smiled down hopefully at her. Fern swallowed looking around nervously then met Alex's green eyes, "Umm... I... Are you sure?"

"Of course, I asked you."

Alex handed her the flowers and she giggled nervously, "You wouldn't rather go with someone in your own class? I can't dance."

Alex grinned down at her reasuringly and Fern felt her heart skip a beat, "I chose to ask you and it doesn't matter if you can't dance. I'll teach you." He held out his hand, "What do you say?"

Fern's mouth went dry as she looked at the hand Alex offered her. She took it smiling up at him, "Why not. I'll go with you Sir deWinslette."

Alex grinned and said, "Please... Call me Alex."
"Okay, Alex" Fern said.
"So, where is this 'Dad's shop'?" Asked Alex jokingly.
"I really don't know." Fern said a troubled look in her eye.
"Well... We can check out the town square" He said.

So, they walked... And walked.

"Here it is!" Alex said happily.

Fern swung the door of her father's shop open, "Father! I'm back!"

A kind man's voice called down from the attic, "Do I hear my daughter? Back all ready, Fern? You ought to stay out longer, you know I can take care of the shop by myself. I've got Ivan here to help me."

Fern laughed, "I know, Father, but I would like you to meet someone."

Fern's father came down the stairs of the attic carrying bolts of fabric. He smiled kindly at his daughter before noticing Alex standing behind her. He set the cloth on the counter dusting his hands, "Is this who you want me to meet, Fern?"

Alex stepped forward, "Pleased to met you, sir."

Fern's father took Alex's hand shaking it while examining Alex closely. He raised an eyebrow at his daughter, "A knight's son, my dear? Has she done something that needs to be repaid, my lord?"

Alex shook his head, "No, not at all. Is your shop always here?"

"The shop is, but we are not. This is my shop, but I and my daughter travel mostly. Ivan runs the shop while I'm gone. You do remember, Fern, that we will not be staying much longer."

"Yes, Father. How much longer though?"

"We will be leaving before the tournament's over. A few days, that's it."

'Oh no.' Alex thought, 'before the ball?'
"Oh..." Fern said disappointedly.
"Well, I better get going! Bye!" Alex said and walked out the door.
'Nice guy. To bad they are leaving' He thought really sadly.
Then, Fern ran up and asked, "Where do you live?"
"I'll find you" Alex replied winking.
"Okay. Bye!"

Alex walked a little then it got dark and he headed back to his house.

As Alex walked down the street he saw a girl run past him looking like she was about to brake into tears.

"Hey! Wait! What’s wrong?" Alex yelled as he ran after her.

I'm going to try and get our people together...

After the tournament, the girls pushed their ways back out to the open. It was only be a few days before the ball opened, and Emily managed to extract a promise out of Oridea that she would attend the ball.
"I'll be seeing you there then!" Emily waved back to Oridea and Kala.
"Allright!"

Diamond paused when a young boy called after her. The boy approached her hurriedly, looking concerned, "Are you all right?"

Diamond scowled at him, "What's it to you?"

Alex blinked, "I was just concerned. I don't like it when girls cry."

Diamond looked around the street before looking back at Alex, "You're a son of a knight, what do my feelings mean to you? No one else cares."

Alex frowned, "I'm sure someone else cares. What's your name?"

"Diamond... What are you doing out so late? Thieves run the streets after dark, you know that."

Alex shrugged, "I'm not afraid of a bunch of thieves. The same question goes for you. Why are you out after dark?"

Diamond frowned folding her arms, "I live on the streets. This is my home."

"You don't mean that, do you?"

Diamond turned, "I mean every word I say. Go home, boy, before you get in trouble."

"My name's Alex."

Diamond paused, "Very well, go home Alex."

Diamond continued walking though not really hurrying. She was in no hurry to return to the hut. Alex followed asking, "Do you know Fern?"

Diamond stopped giving Alex a surprised look before she covered it with indifference, "Maybe. I know who she is. Why?"

Alex shifted nervously clearing his throat, "I... uh... Do you know she's leaving town again?"

"Her father's planning on going east again in a few days. The lords keep buyin up all his silks so he needs to replenish his supplies again. They should be leaving before the ball in a few days."

Diamond looked at Alex suspiciously and Alex held up his hands in a defensive gesture, "I mean no harm. I just want to ask you a favor. You're a thief, right?" Diamond stiffened instinctively and Alex chuckled, "I thought so."

Diamond forced herself to relax but her eyes were taking in the scene around them, looking for soldiers that might seek to arrest her, "Am I that obvious?"

Alex shook his head, "No, just a lucky guess. Now, will you do me a favor?"

Diamond crossed her arms again, "Depends."

Alex grinned nodding thoughtfully.

Fern watched Alex leave walking through the streets. She sighed and turned back into the shop, "Do we really have to leave so soon, Father?"

Fern's father nodded as he counted out Ivan's pay, "Yes, the nobles are demanding more silks and jewels. You do remember my partner stole half of them."

Fern ran her hand lightly over the cloths, smoothing out the rumpled fabric, "I know, Father, but still. Do I have to go with you? Can't I stay here?"

He paused looking at his daughter closely, "If your mother was still alive you would stay here while she tended the shop, but no, you have to come with me. You had always enjoyed the travels before."

Fern smiled at her father, "I still do, but..."

Father closed and locked the lock box, "But what?"

Fern blushed, "Can't we just stay here till after the ball?"

Father frowned, "He asked you to the ball?"

"Yes... I really want to go, Father. I've never seen such wonders. No one has, except the noble born and the knights. Please Father?"

Father sighed, "Dear, I know you like him, but there's a place for everyone. He's a knight's son, you're... you're a merchant's daughter. He was just captured by a pretty face. Fern, you're a beautiful girl, but a knight wouldn't stick by you. He's got an image to protect."

Fern frowned looking at the flowers she had put into a vase on the counter. She sighed, "I guess you're right."

Father smiled, "Don't worry, we'll see what comes of it. Just don't expect much."

I'm assuming it's nighttime...

____________

After telling Diamond the plan she nodded and said, "Okay, I can do that..."
"Good, you also know when to do this right?" Alex asked.

Diamond noded.

"Well, I got to go. Bye!" Alex said and when walking away said, "and thanks for your help!"

Diamond muttered something Alex couldn't hear.

Alex was walking down the road when he saw three guards (three that really hated him) and tried not to be seen by hiding in the shadows.

"Hey! It's young Alex deWinslette!" Said one of the guards loudly.
"Oh, are you up past your bed time?" Another one said in a taunting tone.
"Uh, no" Alex said, "But it looks like it's past yours!"
The guard lunged at Alex but another one held him back.
"You know what happened when you beat up that other kid,” The guard said.
"Yea, did they do that to you or is that your real face?" Alex said to him.
"Hey! Get him!" The 1st one said as all three lunged at Alex.
Alex jumped away and ran, as fast as he could.
'You over did it again Alex!' He told himself as running.

He ran in an inn and jumped over the counter.
'Oh great! Good job, Alex! This is the first place they look!'

Fern smiled up at him, "No reason, just thinking."

Ivan grinned, "What has a pretty girl like you got to be thinking so hard about? Good evening, Father."

"Good evening, Ivan. Have you been watching the tournament?"

Ivan smiled, "Watching it? Nah, I've been in it."

Fern looked up, "You? In the tournament? How?"

Ivan leaned on the counter looking at Fern thoughtfully, "So, you've decided to inquire about the mysterious knight whom nobody knows?"

He laughed at her look of surprise but Father gave Ivan a stern look, "Have you been injured enough in your life? Why go seeking more injury?"

Ivan sighed and went behind the counter, "You're only young once, Father. Why not make the most of it? Don't tell me you would in my place."

Father shook his head, a slight smile pulling at his lips, "You and I are too much alike, Ivan."

Fern went to the counter, "Are you going to the ball?"

Ivan laughed, "Not at the moment, sweet one."

"You are invited, aren't you?"

"Fern, that's enough."

Ivan smiled at her, "Of course I'm invited. I just haven't asked anyone yet. Don't give me that look, Father, of course I'm not thinking of asking her. Too young."

Ivan patted Fern's head and Father spoke, "Fern, why don't you go find something to eat?"

Diamond crouched outside the tailor shop. The moon was full and she was able to see clearly down the street. Cautiously, she peered through the shop window, Why did I let that boy talk me into this? I could be arrested. She laughed mockingly at herself. Why? Because I'm a fool. He knows who... or rather... what I am. Enough of this, I'm wasting time.

The shop was closed, its lights out. Father, Fern, and Ivan lived above the shop. Diamond watched for the windows upstairs darkened before she went down the alley. She slipped from shadow to shadow pausing in a darkened corner looking at the back door of the shop. She fingered her dagger hilt, nervously licking her lips. Diamond shivered slightly as a cool breeze stirred. Finally, she made up her mind and advanced towards the door concentrating on picking the lock. It didn't take her long before she heard the tell-tale click of the lock opening. Before she could move a hand fell on her shoulder preventing her from moving. She jumped, gasping in surprise.

"What are you doing sneaking around, Diamond?"

She turned, looking up at her captor. She breathed a sigh of relief, "Oh, Ivan, you scared me."

Ivan smiled slightly but didn't release his hold on her shoulder, "I see you've decided not to hide behind your wall this time. Come inside."

Ivan pushed her through the door she had unlocked and closed the door firmly before letting her go. Diamond grinned at him, "I see you've also kept your identity hidden."

"That's another matter. You've gotten handier with lock picking since I last saw you."

Diamond frowned, "And once again I've gotten in trouble."

Ivan laughed, "Not quite. Have you eaten tonight?"

"Eaten, yes. What? I have no idea."

Ivan shook his head taking out some food, "Here, eat this. Bread, cheese, and clean water. Why are you picking locks this time?"

Diamond sat on the counter eating the bread and cheese hungrily. She paused meeting Ivan's blue eyes. She swallowed shrugging, "No reason."

Ivan frowned, "Does it have something to do with Fern?" He noticed her hesitation and leaned on the counter next to her, "What is it, Diamond? Tell me."

Ivan listened intently as Diamond explained the situation. He ran a hand nervously through his raven black hair and sighed, "So, what was your plan?"

Diamond looked down sheepishly, "I don't know."

"You don't know? Well, I'll help you there. Do you trust me?"

Diamond searched his face, "You know me."

Ivan smiled, "You can trust me. Now here's the plan..."
