Diamond paused when a young boy called after her. The boy approached her hurriedly, looking concerned, "Are you all right?"
Diamond scowled at him, "What's it to you?"
Alex blinked, "I was just concerned. I don't like it when girls cry."
Diamond looked around the street before looking back at Alex, "You're a son of a knight, what do my feelings mean to you? No one else cares."
Alex frowned, "I'm sure someone else cares. What's your name?"
"Diamond... What are you doing out so late? Thieves run the streets after dark, you know that."
Alex shrugged, "I'm not afraid of a bunch of thieves. The same question goes for you. Why are you out after dark?"
Diamond frowned folding her arms, "I live on the streets. This is my home."
"You don't mean that, do you?"
Diamond turned, "I mean every word I say. Go home, boy, before you get in trouble."
"My name's Alex."
Diamond paused, "Very well, go home Alex."
Diamond continued walking though not really hurrying. She was in no hurry to return to the hut. Alex followed asking, "Do you know Fern?"
Diamond stopped giving Alex a surprised look before she covered it with indifference, "Maybe. I know who she is. Why?"
Alex shifted nervously clearing his throat, "I... uh... Do you know she's leaving town again?"
"Her father's planning on going east again in a few days. The lords keep buyin up all his silks so he needs to replenish his supplies again. They should be leaving before the ball in a few days."
Diamond looked at Alex suspiciously and Alex held up his hands in a defensive gesture, "I mean no harm. I just want to ask you a favor. You're a thief, right?" Diamond stiffened instinctively and Alex chuckled, "I thought so."
Diamond forced herself to relax but her eyes were taking in the scene around them, looking for soldiers that might seek to arrest her, "Am I that obvious?"
Alex shook his head, "No, just a lucky guess. Now, will you do me a favor?"
Diamond crossed her arms again, "Depends."
Alex grinned nodding thoughtfully.
