Alex offered Fern his arm and she took it smiling up at him. Alex smiled back and guided her down the streets at an easy stroll.
"So, what did my mother give you?"
Fern shifted the package under her arm smiling secretively, "Nothing. Just something to take back to my father."
Alex raised an eyebrow, "Really?"
She laughed, "You'll see."
They walked down the street talking about anything that came to mind. When they got back to the tailor shop, Fern opened the door and stepped inside. The candels were still and without warning, Father scooped Fern into his arms exclaiming, "Fern! Where have you been? I've been worried sick."
Fern struggled out of her father's arms embarrassed by his display, "Sir deWinslette found us when some guards tried to arrest us for some reason."
Father frowned looking down at Alex, "You'd better return home, Alex, before your parents get worried."
Alex bowed, "Yes sir. Good evening, Fern."
"Good day."
Alex left and Fern turned to her father, "Father! What has you so uptight? You're not normally this worried."
Father rubbed his chin worriedly, "Ivan's gone. He's been missing all day. Everyone I've talked to hasn't seen him since this morning. Something isn't right. I also recieved word that the thief has escaped."
"Oh..."
Should I be happy or angry that the thief escaped? I don't even know who the thief is. But what about Ivan? Is he really missing?

Ivan nudged Carwain, "Do you know them?"
Carwain looked at Ivan solemnly, "Sadly, yes. They're turncoats."
Turncoats? Traitors? "How so?"
Carwain turned back to watch the strangers, "Now is not the time for that."
Ivan recognized the ending of that conversation, "How are they going to be dealt with?"
"The way they ought to be dealt with."
"How's that?"
Carwain gave a sly smile, "Confuse them."
