Meaning of the 2nd commandment

What is the real meaning of the 2nd commandment?

You shall not make yourself a graven image.

Does it mean we should not show off to others? Does it mean we should try to not be remembered or have a lot of commotion around us? For example, would be being famous breaking this?

It means that you are not to make any graven images of worshipful things.

I think you are looking for this verse:

Luke 6:22 and 26

22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they exclude you and insult you
and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man.
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.


It looks like a true Christian will be kinda infamous - famous in a bad way (in a worldly context) but good thing in the Godly context. Sorry if that sounds confusing because this world twists the meaning of good and evil. The world thinks its good if you mind your own business and keep quiet about the evil in the world while it villifies those who expose the evil in this world.


As for graven image = engraved.

I've always had bad vibes with sculpture or relief art even before I read it in the Bible.

Constructing a 'god' in your mind according to how you desire, or 'imagine', him to be is the modern way of violating the commandment. There is also a much deeper spiritual meaning as well, as there is for all of the commandments.

From Christianity point of view I think the 1st commandment is about having an idol and ideal ultimate. The 2nd one is I think about the physical aspect of the idol and ideal ultimate.
