Hey every1 TGIF!
I have a q
I dont know if it belongs in here but I think this is the place to put it.
Ok so...what is wrong with wanting new things..being materialistic?
I know being TOOO materalistic..ie putting your whole attention and focus on the material and not God is not right but whats wrong with just wanting something new?
IE: Having like a old bent out 1970s out of shape car that runs decent and wanting to buy a new car
Thank you
God Bless

If your old bent out 1970's out of shape car breaks down how are you going to get to church? There is no sin in buying something you need, and in this society you need a car. The sin in all of this would be to buy like a corvette when something less flashy would do just fine. Get it?

Agreed.

Whether it's the actual pursuit of "more stuff" or just the having of said stuff, material wealth in general can be an obstacle in our spiritual journey if we allow it to distract us from what's really important. However... We aren't called to live like monks; there's nothing wrong with buying new things as long as we keep everything in perspective.

I don't think that's materalism to buy a new car if you've got an old car. That's normal, it can even be common sense.

Materialism is when you get attached to things, to works... and forget being fedwith spiritual food.

If you buy a new car, you have to think it's something you manage, but God is the owner. If he wants to take it back, then, you must admit is. It's all about attitude towards life.

There's nothing wrong with fixing something that's broken or replacing it. It's more of your motives. Materialism is when you need to have the best car on the block, or at least better than your rival's. Materialism is when you need something new to feel good about yourself, that you're not "left behind." Materialism is even when you boast about the stuff you've got - you let everybody know what engine you've got in that car at least twice.

If you watch a typical rap video, you'll see materialism all over the place. Look at my clothes, look at my bling, look at my sweet ride and these thirty women I have. That kind of attitude.

I need to not get to into the materialistic worldliness of being consumed with getting new games. I need to have my focus on spiritual things. I do not want games to cause my spiritual life to suffer, thus causing my whole family to suffer. Everything here on earth is so temporary. I could use prayers for us to stay focused. I think the problem with materialisim, is that you are not content and you are not focused on God. Objects become idols. You are lusting for more and being greedy. There is a balance between partaking of an activity, or getting something new, and becominig consumed by it. We just have to do things in moderation.

Mrs. E, I know exactly what you mean; it's easy for me to become consumed by wanting analog synthesizer modules and other musical equipment sometimes. It's so easy sometimes to get carried away with plans for the perfect modular synth or home studio, and completely forget that I make music as an act of worship as much as I do for my own enjoyment-- I'm missing the forest for the trees, so to speak. At times like that, I have to step back for a while and refocus... Moderation is key!

BTW, what kind of games are you referring to?
