In my case it was the exact opposite. My Dad used to smoke (before he quit after having a heart attack), but I've always hated the smell of cigarettes. I can't even breathe when that smell is in the air.

Yea, I can see that and have known others like that too. You're fortunate. When I was 13 most of my friends were experimenting, and it was before the days of awareness of the dangers like now. There was small print on the edge of the pack by then but nothing like there is today. Yet people are still starting up for the same reasons. I'm not sure why I like the smell. I think I still associate it with the stress relieving and relaxing affect of smoking. Thats one of the problems with using a substance as a crutch. That dependence, plus the physical addiction, is hard to quit.

I still remember the first Priest I ever saw smoking. He was standing on the sidewalk in a little town I was cutting through on a short cut from I-80 toward Scranton. Can you quit smoking any time you want?

They never did a thing for me.
A guy I used to work with tried the patch and had vivid dreams. The packaging even warns about them. He said he once thought he was hallucinating. He stopped using the patch and went to the gum.

Ever since, I've been leery of the patch. I went through hundreds of dollars in gum. I'm not sure it was worth it. They worked a little, but for the price, I expected a little more effectiveness.

The patch did nothing at all for my cravings. I may have hallucinated too because by the end of the first day trying them I wanted to twist the patch into a tube and try and smoke it. :) I ran to the store counter like I was ready to have an accident. I think that was in 1995. I took me until finally last year to stay quit.

I just chew regular trident gum. Watermelon is my favorite flavor and its supposed to be good for the teeth.

I took Ban for a while and smoked the whole time. Chantix worked well but made me dangerous on the road and it definitely causes freaky dreams.

The best thing thats ever worked for me is planning a quit date, mega detoxers and vitamins and lots of trident gum.

Drink a gallon of water a day for 2-3 days and take double doses of grape seed, passion flower, valerian root, chewable C, B complex and some St. Johns Wort.

Constantly renew the resolve. Something else that helped me was getting fed up with the price, buying them by the pack, and going to the dentist and getting my teeth cleaned after quitting.

Know your triggers and avoid them for a while when first quitting. Know your stress level and keep the nerves calm. Aroma therapy and prayer can be good for that. Go to a prayer group and get prayed over too. Have a priest anoint you.

There are a lot of support groups people can get involved in too if they want.

Above all, prepare prepare prepare and psyche yourself up for a quit day and when that day comes, follow through. If it doesn't work the first time, reassess and set a new date. Its only a failure to quit quitting.

have you ever had to work for someone or count on someone you work with who smokes ?

a lot of these people- all they think about is their next cigarette- and half of them seem dedicated to making those around them miserable because they want to take out their nicfits on everyone around them

Who cares if a man is smoking tobacco? If one must smoke: I suggest trying a nice cigar or puff upon a good church-warden's pipe (similar to Gandalf's in the LOTR film-trilogy).

Regular cigar and pipe tobacco are fairly fine.

Only cigarettes and chewing-tobacco have an unearthly amount of chemicals and additives, many of which are quite disgusting and extremely unhealthy.

I do not know why some Americans have this Puritan's obsession with Smoking. It stems from the same mistaken root as America's obsession with Alcohol prohibition, laws, and limitations. It is without reason or moderation. It's an inane and rather mindless obsession.

Pax.

N.B. I do not smoke personally. I generally do not have a problem with smoking. Many of my friends are smokers. They just aren't to smoke Cigarettes around me, that's all.

I've both been them in an office, and had them help get me started again a couple of times after I had quit. Not only are the cravings terrible while being in an office, but when you setting in a meeting or break room no one wants to be near you either. The days of smoking in ones office are long gone.
I found it impossible to be in the Army national guard and not smoke by the end of a weekend or maneuver either. Being around smokers will wear you down fast if your not fully over it. Forget about active duty. When you could get shot any day, quitting isn't really a priority. Working alone isn't so bad but there are no external reasons to quit either. At least when working alone, if you do quit, you do it for yourself and can avoid the triggers of being around other smokers.

Have you ever known anyone hospitalized by smoking who then couldn't quit? Dying is a good reason to care. Cigarette smokers inhale, so with a cigar or pipe, they would do the same.

You don't see anything wrong with it but no one is to smoke around you?
