I have been trying to quit smoking for years. Someday, I may succeed. Maybe someday, Mark Wahlberg will succeed too. We are all imperfect.

Nicotine is a heckova drug.

It took me 30 years to quit and I tried better than a dozen times. I even made it 8 months once and 6 another in the past two decades. Its been 15 months this time and the resolve is still there (thank God) but so are the cravings whenever I am around it and at certain triggers here and there. I still think its smells good too. I keep gum on hand.

You will do it when you're ready. Let me know if you ever want any tips. I've tried everything going and different combinations. Some things seemed to help more than others.

Hi there JoanAnias.

Thanks for your support.

Smoking has taken a back seat. I am not quite four weeks sober after my Mother's Day lapse. I am smoking a Marlboro right now, but I am drinking iced tea rather than Jameson's on the rocks.

The two can definitely go together. Even coffee can. Caffeine in general. Anything that raises the heart or anxiety rate. Its not good to pile on more stress and pressure than one is prepared for. Counting the days can be a pressure.

There is no better feeling than being free. Its a real blessing. Like I said, if you're ever interested in what is found most helpful. There are no promises, only answers.

I quit smoking over 20 years a go. I used to love my Marlboro red pack. I quit cold turkey the day after St Paddies. I was an avid runner also. The year after I quit, I ran the the Boston Marathon. 26 miles 365 yards.

I do smoke cigars now, it used to be one a week, but lately since I was laid off, I have been smoking more. I am going to cut it back to the week end. I smoke good Dominican cigars, around $ 10.00 a stick. I love Cigars.

So what about Mark Wahlberg ? He is an adult.

For those of you who smoke or used to, what made you start?

Peer pressure and stupidity, plain and simple. I started when they were $1.50 a carton. I think there is something to the theory that ones parents smoking may have some subconscious psychological affect too, but once hooked, the nicotine addiction is literally more controlling than heroin. I always envied people who could smoke temperately but they are few and I am not one of them. Its all or nothing for me. I know I would restart if I tried a cigar or pipe. Been there done that twice and the pain, agitation and withdrawals of quitting just aren't worth the chance. It takes to long to retrain the brain.

I used to smoke Luckies. Old school non-filters. I switched to Camel filters then the Camel Lights about four months ago.

I'm thinking of trying to quit again. Back to the gum, I guess. I've heard horror stories about the patches.

They never did a thing for me.

In my case it was the exact opposite. My Dad used to smoke (before he quit after having a heart attack), but I've always hated the smell of cigarettes. I can't even breathe when that smell is in the air.

My parents both smoked and 2 of the 8 smoked - Yah, i was one. I did it out of peer pressure and hanging with mostly smokers.
My sis has since quit since my mum was finally forced to quit when she collapsed and stayed the hospital [and nursing home section] from Christmas Eve til after Easter.

If i could get my husband to quit i might have a better time of it. I can quit - no problem - during lent, and thats so strange...
Getting my husband to quit - without mood swings would be the trick. I quit so often - i get very little mod swings.
However; aside from my DH, all my friends smoke...so quitting is dang hard.

Someone is always lighting up and i love the smell.

Yah, ppl tell me get new friends... now how practical is that??

same here, i had two step-fathers who smoked and never did it myself because i knew it was a foolish unhealthy dirty and costly habit

it makes me want to puke when i see parents who dress their kids like scarecrows, are on welfare or foodstamps - blowing smoke in their kids faces

people who smoke are stealing food right out of their children's mouths

where is the money for college ? where is Christmas ? The trip to Disney World ? where are the memories ?

My parents never smoked, and they were very active in discouraging it. I couldn't go over to a friend's house if their parents smoked, and I remember a time when I was a grounded from TV, but a special on lung cancer came on and my parents made me watch it. I guess it worked, because I've never had the desire to try it.

Anyway, I was just curious because most of my friends smoke, and whenever I ask them why they started, they can't really come up with a reason.

I'm a big cigar guy. Own a couple humidors... Oliva and Rocky Patel's are my personal favorites.
