  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

A question arises in whether this was written about the Apostles or if this is meant for all Christian believers. The context lends itself to the sending out of the Apostles. Did it pervade to other believers? There is little record of these events happening by people other than the apostles.

"7 And these signs shall follow them that believe.."

This kinda seems to point that these are things that all believers in JC could do, not just limited to the apostles.

Are you sure there's no one around nowadays that can't heal the sick just by the laying of hands?

I've seen it happen, so I have no doubt that other believers who aren't apostles can do it too.

Following with Dave's statement, even more critical is to determine whether this is descriptive or prescriptive. Thus, even if it is descriptive of others beyond the Apostles, it does not demand that this be done.

"And these signs shall follow them that believe.." Seems to be presciptive.

Could laying on of the hands be spiritual healing? "...they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover." Faith healing doesn't heal the body everytime.

Mark 16:17-1817 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; 18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

Are all of these signs to be interpreted literally?

There are times when God intervenes miraculosly to protect his followers. Occasionally he gives them special powers. Paul handled a snake safely (see ACTS 28;5) and the disciples healed the sick(MATTHEW 10;1 ACTS 3;7-8) This does not mean that we should test God by putting ourselfs in dangerous situations.

Except you can't use an English translation to determine that. In Greek the verbs are simply future tense.

from the NIV Bible Comentary (by Zondervans)........

17-18 The promise of signs is not limited to the apostles, for they will accompany any who believe. The apostles' power to exorcise demons is to be shared by other believers. Speaking in tongues is not mentioned elsewhere in the Gospels and seems to reflect a post-Pentecost situation. Lk 10:19 speaks of trampling on snakes but not of picking them up with one's hands (v.18; cf. Ac 28:3-6). The drinking of poison without harm is unknown in the NT. Anointing the sick with oil is mentioned in 6:13, but no laying on of hands by the apostles occurs in the Gospels (cf. Ac 28:8).
