  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Sorry if I correct people too much. I would put all the info on one thread...but the only problem is I'd be typing up all 4 of the books I have of Him, lol. I guess I could work on one...kinda just generalize it. Thanks for the suggestion, and sorry if I'm a know-it-all, haha.

ttyl,
Bless.

Hey
A big fan of ShockRock, Gothic, Death and Black Metal etcetera, Manson and NIN are two bands I normally mention together, and stay very far away from.

What's common in Shock Rock and especially Goth is that there are often more messages than meet the eye. Therefore, some caution might need to be exercised.

I apologize if this has been mentioned before, as I haven't read all of the replies, but I have to comment....Marilyn Manson is NOT, I repeat NOT a gothic band. Shock rock has nothing to do with Gothic music.

Again, I'm sorry if someone else has brought this up. I just can't let something like that go, as a very good genre of music is being brought down to MM level. I personally like his style, but it is not Gothic.

Does it really matter what label you put on Manson?
I'm so sure that he's ruining other people's music because some people choose to put him under the same label.
If you don't like the music, then why care?
Why care about labels at all?

Also not my cup of tea. Maybe because he is mainstream, and he looks like a freak. But I guess I can't use that defense, since I listen to black metal (corpse paint).
Hahah, I have the exact same problem. I think the guys from slipknot and MM are the most horrible posers, but at the same time I listen to black metal with such a load of nails and paint and black and white pics in a nekroforest that it hurts my eyes. Luckely the bands I really care for don't use corpsepaint, they are too underground and kvlt for that  MM is not my thing, he's way too mainstream and his music kinda sucks most of the time. I like his propaganda though...

Because for one thing many Christians see Manson as satanic. Why have him grouped in with other artists who aren't what he's about? Plus, there's always the annoyance of having Manson obsessed spooky kids claiming they are "gothic" and ruining it for the people that really care (I am not Gothic, by they way). Labels exist, and they can cause trouble. I've certainly felt it myself.

Good grief I know!
Manson is not gothic in the least
But a lot of "mansonites" claim to be goths.
I just mentioned Goth as part of my musical interest. Like I did Metal in the same post.
I could have mentioned classical as much as gothic.

MM dresses as some goths, so I can understand why people mix him with that. He also acts really "evil" so it's logical he's associated with metal. If you can give me 15 other shock-rock bands I'll acknowledge the term, making up genres for every band is ridiculous. I don't know what he plays though, maybe something like industrial metal, like Ministry.

I think musically they're not bad. I think the fuss comes in when people hear him bash and talk negatively regarding Christianity, but I personally think he's full of hot air and doing most if not all of it for attention and publicity, as well as to get a rise out of people. He's an entertainer, not a musician.

I would agree as well. I would add look at the way he dresses and looks. In one picture I recall him having female breasts, etc.

I ignore him.

He states he is a member of the santanic church (so reported on a tv spot I saw on him and a radio promo). He is anti-establishment. His shows promote rebellion.... musicially they are ok... it is the message he sends to the fans.

I think he is just doing what most shock artists have done in the past... Alice Cooper, Kiss, Ronnie James Dio, and more. He is just another entertainer and musician.

He just keeps pushing the envelope. When we finally stop getting shocked at him, there will be someone else to push the envelope further and further. When is too much too much though?

Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Rackets And Drapes, Alice Cooper... Just a few shock-rock bands.
Alice Cooper started it all. He was the one who came up with the term "Shock Rock". And it is suitable for the style IMHO.

I don't think there's much 'industrial' about it. Shock Rock is a good definition. It's not quite metal, it's rock. And the purpose of most lyrics are to shock. To provoke reactions.

I like Manson's music but I find the man a bit of a joke tbh. I think he's a very intelligent man who has turned Satanism into a theatrical display (I'm not all that clued up on what it is). I can't take him seriously when he's giving it the Satan thing but musically I think the band are excellent.

Okay, so I've got a bunch of Marilyn Manson in my mp3 player now, and I'm just not getting what all the negative fuss is about. It's good jogging music, at least ^_^

Seriously, I'm curious. I hear all the time that Marilyn Manson's music is satanic, that it's a negative influence on kids, etc. Now maybe I'm just not listening to the same songs, but I haven't noticed any super questionable lyrics or anything. I'm kind of inclined to write the whole fuss off as utter bunk. But in the interest of equal time, could anyone explain why Manson's got this awful reputation?

And PLEEEEEEASE don't just cut and paste from some anti-secular-music website :)

Nothing about it glorifys the LORD. The man Blasfames the one true living God, and yet you see nothing wrong. People hear the things that Mr.Manson says and buys into it. They hear it and love him for it, and are drawn into thinking that satanism is OK and then they look into it, and eventualy there is lamentation in heaven because statan has another one.
