I wouldn't do it, but I think there is a certain logic to it: if you breathe only through the snorkel, and have the "opening" of the snorkel pointing up, methinks you would be breathing air from above your head. And I would suspect that air would be less likely to harbour airborne virus particles.

I am guessing that, even if virus could hand in the air for a little time, gravity will ultimately bring it down to the ground. Just a guess, of course.
