Like George Zimmerman stalking a kid, I guess. A lot of people had no problem with him murdering an unarmed kid.

I'm no lawyer, but I'd assume that there's probably a reasonable standard of self defense that was breached in the interaction at some point. "Give me back my hat" is one thing; "I'm going to slice you open with a sword" is another.

Though maybe it's a bit much to expect a sword-wielding roller-disco pirate to be reasonable.
