  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Are you majoring in something you don't like just so you can get a job in that field? if so, what would u rather major in?

for example, i want to be an elementary school teacher so im majoring in psychology and getting my masters in teaching. i would MUCH MUCH MUCH rather major in biblical studies but i want to be a teacher so i think i'll just have to stick with my plan. :(

I tried it, it ruined all motivation to go to college whatsoever. Though I'm back and motivated now, I'm getting a degree in something I enjoy studying and letting my career take care of itself. Mostly, I'm going to college just to say that I did it.

I'm majoring in Sociology even though I'm going to be a foreign missionary.
Hehe, we're somewhat on the same page. I'm majoring in English but I'm thinking about opening a restaurant.

I am not but several friends are. I have a friend majoring in business but he really wants to major in sociology. He is going where he thinks the future is. The thing my parents told me is I better like what I go into. All the years spent studying for a career I will grow weary of is the biggest mistake college students make.

I would recommend getting first a practical degree you can use. Later you always go back to study your desired field.

Much easier that way than in reverse!

Or alternately, if you can spend a little extra time, get a practical degree with a minor in a desired field, perhaps.

I've never been able to understand how people can do that. I don't care about anything other than flying, especially when it comes to some rediculous class I am required to take. (not flight tech related that is)

People (especially other pilots) have always told me to get a "practical" degree as they see the flight degree as nearly useless. "You need to have a Plan B in case you cannot fly." Well, frankly I have plans A-Z covered and that is aviation. Whether I'm building them from my wheelchair or flying them.

It's so great to hear how much faith people have in education, isn't it?

I don't understand how majoring in something unrelated to what you are going to do as a career can possibly be any benefit. Why not at least double major? I certainly understand having a plan B, but not ignoring plan A alltogether.

It's one thing if you are unsure as to what you want to do, but quite another if you do know what you want and are passionate about it.

I've always told my kids that they had better find a job they like.. because they are going to be doing it for a long time..

I think working at something I didn't enjoy would make it very difficult for me to even get there let alone do a good job once I did..

Liberal Arts degree? Forget about getting a good job. Biblical Theology? Better be called and have the opportunity to serve God. Business degree? Better be your cup of tea or you will be miserable. Computer Science? better be able to deal with stress. I can go on and on. Forgive me I'm not trying to be negative. Just be careful in choosing and don't wait to long.

My major right now is Nursing... Before, I was going to major in this because it was easy to get a job after graduating, could be a stay at home mom, etc..

BUT now I feel God is calling me to be a missionary overseas in healthcare.

Some advice I would give to all of you... Don't worry about what you're going to major in. Major in something you enjoy... God really will handle the rest. Don't worry about the money, and definitely do not major in something just for the money. That is very worldy and prideful, and I doubt Jesus would encourage it.... Do not go after the American Dream, as it leads to "comfort" which is something Jesus NEVER preached!! He told us to DIE DAILY to ourselves and pick up our CROSS and walk!! Hardly very comfortable things!!

Just remember that we are not all called to be ministers, BUT we are ALL called to minister in the name of Jesus. If God calls you to a certain field, know that is your missions field! Do all things for the glory of Lord Jesus! :)
