IOW, do most people play with expert level cards? I just bought some 8th Edition Core Set cards to learn how to play, and I want to know whether having only these cards will put me at a disadvantage.

Namaste,

well.. if you play with people that already have alot of cards, you can be at a disadvantage... of course, then you simply tell them that you want to use Type 2 rules :) one of the tournament formats.

in any event.. the core sets are perfect for learning the game... also, though good cards are good it's about how many you have in your deck and if you draw them or not.

you can beat decks that have nothing but rare cards with a deck of nothing but commons. in fact, when i duel for ante, that's what i do! i've no intention of losing a rare on a bad draw!

give me Kird Apes, Giant Growth and a few Feral Rages and i'm a happy duelist :)

I've been out of the Magic loop for awhile now. But while I was collecting, I collected Ice Age pretty heavily. I played mostly white/green or white/blue desk and have an love for dual lands.

Anyone else play dual-lands? Not damage-lands or counters but true 3rd Ed. good stuff?

Also, want some big-fun creature killing, then try Twiddle(blue) with Royal Assassin(black). Very nice.

That would die to my Black/Red "Infinate Destruction" deck so fast. That was my best deck ever. It had 24 lands, 3 creatures, and 30 creature destruction cards (2 nevinyrrals disks, and an Icy Crown for enchantments were also in there). It was pure, undisguised, ownage of creatures.

I have a white/blueFU deck I would put up against any red/black deck. Not saying I would beat you...but I could teach you how to hate. ;)

I've got about 36 of them. Think I'm missing 3 Savannas and 1 White/Red (I forget what it's called now).

The newest incarnation of dual lands is actually pretty good, too--they just come into play tapped. I can accept them.

Plus, the City of Brass is a "core" (8th ed.) card now, which is nice.

Also fun is the War Barge (artifact, tap: creature gains islandwalk) and Merfolk Assassin (blue, tap: kill creature with islandwalk). Them's old school combos.

Oh that's tough. I could usually shut down creature enchantments if I got the crown (by giving them to my own Uber-creatures) but life could be tough. I think I kept an enchantment basher or two in the sideboard for those decks, but life could get difficult. I was usually reduced to waiting for nevinyrral's disk, which would destroy the COPs, and thus let my Spirit of Night get a couple turns attacking unhindered. 6/5 First Strike, Flying, Protection from Black, unaffected by summoning sickness. Cost 9 mana, but it was worth it.
