Now I have to brush up on anthropology. :)

1. Man is made in the Image and Likeness of God

Genesis 1:26 - "And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." 9:6-"For in the image of God made he man."
What is meant by the terms image and likeness? Image means the "shadow or outline of a figure", while likeness denotes the resemblance of that shadow to the figure. The two words, however, are practically synonymous. That man was made in the image and likeness of God is fundamental in all God's dealings with man (1 Corinthians 11:7; Ephesians 4:21-24; Colossians 3:10; James 3:9). We could express it as : Let us make man in our image to be our likeness.

God is spirit; He does not have parts and passions as a man. Consequently Mormon and Swedenborgian views of God as a great human are wrong.

We learn form certain scriptures in what this image and likeness consisted.
Ephesians 4:23, 24 - "And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness."
Colossians 3:10 (noted above) "And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him." It becomes clear from these passages that the image of God consists in knowledge, righteousness, and holiness; moral, not physical likeness.

Here is a different insite:

Humans have body, soul, and spirit.

The body....pretty self explanitory...flesh, bone and blood. (God is body - the Son, Jesus deity in the flesh)
The soul....consists of the mind - the way we think, our choices
and our emotions - our feelings (God is soul - the Father, the mastermind to all things)
The spirit....is what makes us live, without the spirit we would be dead, we would be 'zombies'....Gen 1:2:7 (God is Spirit - the Holy Spirit, the lifegiver)
"the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being."
The breath of life was the spirit God imparted to us....so that we could live.
Gen 1:2
Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
Without the 'Spirit hovering over the waters' nothing could have become to life....the Spirit gives us life.
When God breathed into our/Adams nostrils, He gave man life...giving man a spirit. (God is spirit)

God created man in his image/likeness...(a 3 unified being) not just physical, but spiritual and emotional as well.....thus a trinity in ourselves.

Deuteronomy 6:5
Love the LORD your God with all your heart(spiritually) and with all your soul(mentally) and with all your strength(physically).

I hope this bought a different and helpful insite.

This is a Bible verse:

Romans 8:29b
...conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the Firstborn among many brothers.
We are conformed to His image, to be just like Him, God gains many sons and Christ is the Firstborn. The only begotton Son became the Firstborn among many in resurrection. So He is not ashamed to call us His brothers. Hebrews 2:11.

We are created in God's image and likeness in that we are three-part beings as God is. God formed man's body of the dust of the earth. This was fashioned in the image God would later take when Christ took the form of man; remember, this was planned before the foundation of the world. This body was necessary for man to function in the physical world into which he was placed. Then God breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, giving him a spirit, with which to commune with God. Remember, those who worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth. Flesh can not respond to spirit, so it is this spirit that responds to God. And man became a living soul, a bridge formed by the union of spirit and body to help the flesh respond to promptings by the Spirit of God to our spirits.

While I think I understand what you are saying here, what i would urge us all to remember is that God condescended to literally take on human flesh in the person of the incarnate Christ. He lived, died, was ressurected and ascended to heaven in that flesh, sanctifying it. He did indeed in the words of St. Athanasius, "become man, so that we might become as God."
His unworthy servant,
Eusebios.

Where and when did Athanasius say that?
That is a great quote.

God became man so man could become God, but not in the Godhead as an object of worship. We are His body and the One New Man.

Oh, He indeed took on that form, but He created us according to His nature, for He Himself is invisible and formless.
Yet throughout the Old Testament, Yahweh appears as a man. For example in Judges 13, when Manoah and his wife talk to a "man", yet they realise at the end exactly who it was: God. Actually it's the preincarnate Christ, which is why they didn't die (compared to Exodus 33:20).

The incarnation isn't so much that Jesus took on the form of man, but that he took on flesh, in other words, he became part of sinful humanity. He's always been a man, and always will be. I therefore have no problem in saying that the "image" does also include physical likeness. The eternal Son of the Father has always had two arms, two legs, etc. The physical creation isn't something alien to God - it's the place he's created as his eternal home.

God isn't invisible and formless. God the Holy Spirit is, but God the Father and God the Son are not. The Son has been seen, both before and after the incarnation, and the Father has a form which cannot be seen simply because it would result in the death of anyone who saw it.

I don't think John 4:24 ("God is spirit") is a comment on God's physical qualities, but rather on the way he is known. Otherwise "you must worship in spirit" seems to imply that we must become invisible and formless.

Pete.
