On a Live Journal Lost community someone posted this really good theory on what's going to happen in the season finale. They made all these connections to the Bible and I thought it was really good so I thought I'd post it here.
Theory on how it's going to end:
Well first off I believe that the season has been full of clues as to the nature of the Island, and whats going to happen in the future. I believe that the finale will go something like this. The first books are the old testament are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus and Numbers. I read through them all yesterday, and if you think about them in conjunction with Watership Down and A Wrinkle In Time (a topic I mentioned earlier) things start to make a lot of sense.
So lets look first at Genesis, the story of creation. In my mind Genesis relates to the story of "Adam and Eve" the two bodies found when the lost crew first enter the caves. Remember that somebody (can't remember exactly who) found the black and white stones? Well I like to think of those as the apple Eve is tricked into eating. All through the show there are many allusions to a black and white object (The stones, The Backgammon game, Sawyers glasses- please comment if I've missed one) which represents good and evil or a secret to the island (Rousseau's 'Black Rock') or as the bible puts it- the apple represents the tree of knowledge from which all wisdom is taken, and to eat is to desire to become god. I believe that the 'Black rock' she refers to is the key to some sort of psychokinetic power- more on that later.
Skip ahead now to modern day where we find the book of Exodus. The four major events in Exodus are as follows : 1. The freeing of the Hebrews of slavery. This is the series of events which removes the lost crew from their everyday lives, or 'slavery' of the modern world(.- I believe Walt or Locke mentions something about freedom of the island. ) and their migration to the island. It has been often mentioned that they are all there for a reason, as with the Hebrews who were God's (the black rocks) chosen people. 2. The Journey to Mount Sinai. I believe this is simply the plane journey to the island, where all the current events of the show have taken place.
This is where I delve into a little more speculation. The third event is Gods covenant with his people, in which they are given a series of laws and instructions to live by. In lost terms, I believe that this refers to 'the others' a second group of people who came to the island in another fashion before our castaways. We know that at the very least 3 other groups have come there ( Adam and Eve, The army team mentioned in Hurleys episode, and Rousseau's scientists) One or more of these groups must have a special interest in the power of the island itself, and they possibly worship or work for the 'black rock' somehow. Finally, The Hebrews build a place of worship for Israel, and further laws regarding the proper worship of god are revealed. I believe this to be the building of the radio tower near the black rock, which enables to builders to draw others to the island, possibly by using the power of the numbers.
Ok so now we have the third book Leviticus. I believe that this refers specifically to Locke, as he seems to have a relationship with the powers of the island in tune with 'the others'. Leviticus basically lays down a lengthy series of instructions and commands for his people to follow in order to survive (I believe Jack once mentions that Locke is their best chance of survival). Remember that Locke often knows things because he has 'seen the heart of the island' - the Black Rock. His prophetic visions (of Boones death for one) and his seemingly uncanny ability to find useful things on the island, and the fact that he can now walk all point to Locke being like one of the others, he says when trying to open the hatch (and I'm paraphrasing here) 'I've done everything you told me to, why won't you give me what I want?" I think he is talking to the Black Rock here and not the hatch, as he somehow has discovered the islands power.
Now comes that part where I guess whats going to happen next. The fourth book of the Old Testament is Numbers, the title of Hurleys episode. In Numbers Moses and Aaron (Locke maybe?) are commanded by God to take a census of all the people in the land before taking a journey to the true promised land. I consider Hurley to be moses because a) he took the census b)He was the one (at least in my mind) he began the chain of events that lead to everybody coming to the island by using the numbers again, which somehow triggers certain people to come their, possible against their will c) I think there is an episode or two where Hurley walks around with a shirt on his head and he has a stick, which looks very Moses like (anybody got a screen cap to back this up?) and d) Hurley is awesome. After the first census is taken the people goto Moab, east of the Jordan river. They spend some time their (mistakenly)before leaving to the southern border of Canaan but failed to enter the promised land that way. Afterwards they return and go east of the Jordan where some people stay while the remainder cross the river into Canaan.
I think this relates to the story like this. The Lost crew first arrive and settle on the beach, while trying to leave the island they move to the caves , and while this helps them survive they do not find an escape. People leave the caves (after Ethan, the representative of the others) attacks Claire. People return to the beach where people stay while the raft leaves for the promised land , hoping to return to collect the others. Now if we look at this in relation to Watership Down, heres what I think will happen.Walt (fiver), after telling locke (thereah) of the dangers of the hatch, leads the way to a new colony, where they find a second a tribe of animal friends and some enemies. I think that the raft is going to leave shore and miss the trade wind by a few hours, and during the turn around will land on the other end of the island with the other end of the plane (as predicted in boones radio message) . The second group are living in fear as they are in much closer proximity to 'the others' (Ethans group) and the tower built under the black rock. They assist in their battle only to have the other rabbits ( the main lost crew) join them in their fight, where they find a new home after the leaders of each rabbit tribe (the black and white stone) fight over leadership of the tribe. I think once Michael and the raft crew find the radio tower, they will contact Sayid (one of the few people outside locke to here the voices of 'the others') using the tower in order to give the other castaways directions to the second tribe.
I believe the black rock is emits some kind of psychokinetic field (maybe an alien meteorite) that enhances the latent psychic power of certain individuals, and may manifest the subconscious desires of people in its vicinity. This is demostrated through the visions Jack has early on. Also I believe that Walts dog DID die during the plane crash (the rumored season 2 episode with a flashback from the dogs perspective may confirm/deny this) and Walt brought him back to life somehow, in the same fashion as he conjured up that bird in his episode 'special'. Thats all for now, that should clear up a few of the missing pieces that I left out from the earlier post.
