In the old Testement the L-rd was spelled out
Yod Hey Vod Hey or YHVH which they pronounced Adonai but
which we pronounce as Yahweh or Jehovah.

The Jews have always reffered to the father quite simply as Ha'Shem or
"The Name" He told Moshe (Moses) I AM WHO I AM

We typically refer to the L-rd not by his name since we don't know it but rather by his atributes. Jehovah Shalom, (Lord of Peace) Jehovah Jireh, (Lord our Provider) El Elyon (The Great Eternal G-d)

Many will ask why a Jew or a Messianic leaves out the vowels in the words L-rd or G-d. Lets go back to the original thing I was talking about YHVH no vowels no way to pronounce it really. This is done out of respect for the concept of the name of G-d. That it could never be taken lightly nor written down and destroyed or deleted on a computer terminal. Thus not "taken in vain"

I hope that sheds a little bit of light on the subject.

Blessings

Ok, so YHVH means I AM WHO I AM? So God didn't give a name?

Sort of. "I AM" in Ex. 3:14 is spelled aleph-hey-yod-hey, while the name used in Ex. 3:18 is yod-hey-vav-hey.

I don't know if it will be any help, but you might want to compare Exodus 3:14 with Exodus 3:18. You can find the Hebrew and English in parallel columns here.
