The Reverse Order of Ezra/Nehemiah Reconsidered

The most important controversy which has arisen in regard to the books of Ezra and Nehemiah is the question of the order of Ezra and Nehemiah. According to the traditional view, Ezra arrived in the seventh year of Artaxerxes I (Ezr. 7:7) in 458 BC, and Nehemiah arrived in the same king’s twentieth year (Neh. 2:1) in 445.

Many scholars have adopted a reverse order in which after Nehemiah arrived in 445, Ezra arrived in the seventh year of Artaxerxes II in 398. Other scholars have favoured an intermediate position which maintains the contemporaneity of the men but places Ezra later than the traditional view in the twenty-seventh or the thirty-seventh year of Artaxerxes I, that is in 438 or 428.

There are numerous lines of arguments which have been adduced in favour of the reverse order. We shall consider these arguments, and then the counter-arguments of those who are in favour of either the traditional or the intermediate position.
Ezra 2:1-3 Now these are the children of the province that went up out of the captivity, of those which had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away unto Babylon, and came again unto Jerusalem and Judah, every one unto his city; Which came with Zerubbabel: Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, Baana

Seriah was the father of Exra. And was one of those who sealed with Nehemiah as were a number of the others in the list above. If there is an eighty or so year gap between Ezra 6 & 7 then some of them must have been well over 100 by the time they sealed, and Nehemiah must have been at least 150 when he rode around the walls.

Bigvai returned with 2056 of his descendants and also sealed with Nehemiah.

Have you noticed that between Ezra ch. 6 and ch 7, it jumps from the 6th year of Darius to Artaxerxes. Not only that but from the 6th year of Darius, Ezra 6:15 to the 7th year of Artaxexes, Ezra 7:7

Ezra 6:14 And the elders of the Jews builded, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet and Zechariah the son of Iddo. And they builded, and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandment of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Persia.

They built it according to the command of Cyrus, Darius and Artaxerxes, but it was finished in the 6th year of Darius. Darius and Artaxerxes were one and the same person.

- Personally I have no idea!
- I know there are different controversies!

- In Ezra Chapter one, we are told about king Cyrus of Persia who made a proclamation in his first year and Sheshbazzar brought all the utensils from the temple back to Jerusalem!
- In Ezra Chapter two, we are told about those who came back with Zerubbabel, Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, and Baanah and a big list of all the israelites who came back!
- But we are not told when they came back!
- After seven months, some built the altar and offered sacrifices in Chapter three!
- Then in the second month of the second year after their arrival at the house of Yah.weh, they supervised the building of the house of Yah.weh!
- In Chapter four, we are told about an attempt to stop the building throughout the reigh of Cyrus king of Persia and down to the reigh of darius king of Persia!
- Then at the beginning of the reign of Xerxes, an accusation was made!
- Then in the days of Artaxerxes king of persia, a letter was sent!
- Then an order was issued to block the rebuilding!
- And it remained blocked until the second year of the reign of king darius of Persia!
- Then in Chapter five, Zerubbabel started again the rebuilding!
- They tried to stop them again!
- But king Darius issued an order to look for cyrus' decree about the rebuilding!
- They found it anf the israelites could keep on the rebuilding!

- Now in Nehemiah Chapter 2, in the twentieth year of king Artaxerxes, there is a discussion between Nehemiah and the king!
- And the king tells Nehemiah to go back to Jerusalem!
- In Chapter 5, we are told that Nehemiah was governor of Judah from the 20th year to the 32nd year of king Artaxerxes!
- in Nehemiah Chapter 8, we are told about Ezra bringing the law before the israelites!
- In Nehemiah Chapter 12, we are told about the priests and levites who went up with Zerubbabel: Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra, Amariah, Malluch, Hattush, Shekaniah, Rehum, Meremoth, Iddo, Ginnethon, Abijah, Mijamin, Moadiah, Bilgah, Shemaiah, Joiarib, Jedaiah, Sallu, Amok, Hilkiah and Jedaiah!
- Then at the inauguration of the walls, all the levites are present!
In Nehemiah Chapter 13, Nehemiah went to Babylon in the 32nd year of king Artaxerxes and asked the king for a leave of absence to go back to Jerusalem!

XERXES is not mentioned in Ezra or Nehemiah.

The order the kings are given are Cyrus, Ahasuerus, Artaxerxes, Darius.
Cyrus, we know. The historical names are, in order,
Cambyses, the son of Cyrus, the Ahasuerus of Ezra.
the psuedo Smerdis. According to Herodotus and other historians a Median Magi who ruled for 8 months, Herodotus, 1 year, Josephus, 18 months according to another but I can't remember his name, the Artaxerxes of Ezra.
Darius.up to Ezra 6. Artaxerxes from chapter 7.

There are other kings named Ahasuerus in the Scripture one in Esther, and the other in Daniel 9:1. The father of Darius the Mede. Josephus said Darius had another name under the Greeks, but he didn't seem to know what it was. But he said his father was Astyages. Xenophon said that the son of Astyages was Cyaxares, the uncle of Cyrus, who Cyrus allowed to rule until he died, about 2 years it seems.

So it seems there were various names for some ot these kings.

If the king Artaxerxes is the same as Darius, as I believe it is, that would fit in with Daniel 9:25 The Street and Wall would be buit in troubles times in 7 weeks. i.e. 49 years.
The timeline
Cyrus 9 years
Cambyses Ahasuerus 6 years
The Magi Artaxerxes 1 yr the Artaxerxes who stopped the buiding.
Darius Artaxerxes 31

47 years. Given that some of those years would have included months, then that would fit in exactly.
