I am not sure how many other churches have what is known as a "lock in"?

But if your church does..can you give me some idea's on what to do at one.. my church has never had one, and i'm the head of the youth department now and I would love to have one, because of the fun and closeness in a Christian atmosphere you can experience.

any idea's?

Oh my. Heh. That brings back some memories.

You're 19 and head of the Youth Dept?! Is there no Youth Minister?

First- Chaperones. Legally you're an adult, but you'll need some "real" adults as chaperones, preferably a couple of parents of some of the youth.
Second- Agenda. Have a general theme along with a format. Stick to it as best as possible.
Third- Pick a place where the boys and girls can easily and fairly completely be watched and seperated, specifically if it's also a "sleep-in".

You and/or the Youth Minister can pick pretty much any topic as a theme, though certainly it should be relevant to the teens and youth. Along with this, plan for entertainment, recreation, refreshments, whole group time, potentially small group time and individual quiet time.

Have everything planned out, along with extra things to do - just in case, and above all, be flexible. Take the time necessary to get proper approval, funding, materials, sites, etc. Also, give your youth several weeks advanced notice.

As a youth I went to lock-ins at people's homes, in our church, other churches, and state Baptist facilities. Some were for one night, some basically a weekend retreat. Some of the over-night lock-ins were event packed all night, no sleeping, and some were sleep-ins. We'd watch Christian or secular movies, relevant and not. We'd play various kinds of games, some indoors and others outside. Some places provided a cafeteria, some just snacks and sometimes members of the congregation would cook and/or bring food for us.

I don't recall any of the topics, but to be sure we had mini services and Bible studies along with some quiet times for reflection.

If you have no Youth Minister, I'd bring this up to the Pastor and perhaps some of the deacons and even some of the parents.

You can do just about anything you usually do, except longer.

I have mixed opinions of lock ins. I feel in these days, since the time is short, the church should be always exhorting all men to seek to press in to know the Lord. Not that I have anything against fun events in a church, not by any means, but when you gather together a bunch of youth for such a long, undivided time, you'll either overwhelm people with poor attention spans, or entertain them straight for hours on end for fun's sake, not for the sake of the Lord or his Church.

OH the FOND MEMORIES!!!! I grew up in a very very large Christian Church and we use to have lock-ins. My best advice is HAVE LOTS OF CHAPERONES!!!!! Our lock-ins consisted of singing lots of worship songs, eating lots of pizza, watching Christian movies.... and since our church was so large, and we normally had our lock-ins in the basement, we were normally allowed for an alloted period of time to run through the halls and balconies screaming wildly and being wild....just because thats normally not allowed. Was kind of thrilling running through the dark church in the middle of the night. People jumping out at you around every corner. I'll never forget it. I know people will read this and think it was very disrespectful, but we were pre-teens just having fun...and it's only a building.
