Liturgical Daily Devotions & Collect Prayers

Being a baby Lutheran, I'm really interested in some of the more liturgical devotional forms, such as daily offices, like these:

While there are a few sources (of which the Lutheran Liturgical Prayer Brotherhood site is extremely cool) but so far all the outlines I've found just say at some point the equivalent of "now recite the collect for the day".

Is there a good online source for collects of the day? The only sources I've found - and they're still not really the kind of resource I'd like - are for Anglican worship.

Also, I sure wish there was a Lutheran version of the Mission St Clare daily prayer site. Seems like the folks that hang around the WT would be the kind to take something like this on.

As the Rule of the society states, "The Society is made up of Lutheran clergymen and laity committed to the confessional, liturgical, sacramental, and spiritual renewal of the Church of the Augsburg Confession." I would recommended it. It hits all of the Festivals, and the commemorations, with the appointed readings and an appropriate Collect for each day. It also contains the liturgies for the daily office, and the office of the hours.

Reformed and Lutheran churches have in common the doctrine of Salvation by Grace. Does that not count for more?

As they say... yet some denominations have predestination, some decision theology.

They also claim Sola Scriptura, yet they miss the validity of the sacraments, including confession and absolution.

Most reformed denominations see it as them and us. Them being RC, us being all the protestants. When they learn what we teach and believe, they have nothing but contempt because they figure since Lutherans are "Protestants" like they are, we should know better.

It's difficult to have any kind of meaningful discussion under these conditions. On the other hand, I find that I can sit down with RC and Orthodox lay and Clergy alike, have long serious discussion and even debate and then walk away friends. With reformed denominations, not always but often, they break off the conversation, hear what they want to hear, and tell me I'm not Christian. For me, I tend to stick to the weather with protestant and reformed, less hard feelings.

There you have it. Sorry if this sounds hard, but I call em like I see em.

The Treasury of Daily Prayer is worth the investment.

For example, you choose the order you wish to use (Matins, vespers, compline, morning and evening prayer, Daily prayer etc...)

The appointed readings for each day, by the Church calendar and by date, contain everything in one place, you do not need to have a seperate Bible and flip from reading to reading. For example, last Saturday the 27th, was the Commemoration of St. Cyril of Alexandria. It contains the full texts of the following:

The Psalmody was 51:1-9. OT reading Joshua 2:1-24. NT Acts8:26-40. Devotional writing was by St. Cyril himself. The hymnody was from LSB 438:1.

Collect

Heavenly Father, Your servant Cyril steadfastly proclaimed Your Son, Jesus Christ, to be one person, fully God and Fully man. By Your infinite mercy, keep us constant in faith and worship of Your Son , who lives and reigns....

It also contains a brief bio of Cyril.

This book will take you through the whole NT and 3/4 of the OT every year.

This book is not a one time read, but it is for a life time.

If you watch, it will come back on sale at 1/2 price in a few months.

First off, In the LCMS, LCC, the orders for the daily office are in the Hymnals.

"The Lutheran Hymnal" contains Matins on page 32, Vespers on page 41 as well as the "Great Litany" on 110, and three versions of the Sufferages beginning on 113.

"Lutheran Worship" also contains Matins Pg. 208, Vespers 224, Morning Prayer 236, Evening Prayer 250, Compline 263, and Responsive Prayer; Sufferages 1 and 2 on 270 and 273.

"Lutheran Service Book" contains the following: Matins 219, Vespers 229, Morning Prayer 235, Evening Prayer 243, Compline 253, Responsive Prayer 1 & 2 282 and 285, Daily Prayer for individuals and Families 294.

You should be able to get your hands on one of these. The older ones should be cheep. Your Congregation may even have a few coppies kicking around gathering dust. Talk to you Pastor, he should be able to help.

They are somewhat different than the ones from the "Treasury", and it does not include the appointed Psalmody. (this can be found in any of the hymnals in the "daily Lectionairy".

I'm a little surprised I've never come across the Lutheran Lectionary Project before, given all the time I've spent googling for Lutheran devotional sites. Thanks for the link!

I've got a copy of the old red hymnal with the thin, gold cross on the front that my pastor gave me. (That's 'The Lutheran Hymnal', right?) I'll look for the sections you cited.

I agree that the Treasury of Daily Prayer is a wonderful resource. This was my Father's Day present this year, my first investment in Lutheran resources. Now I'm saving up for the new study bible they have coming out. I'm hoping they'll reduce the price after Christmas - that would be just in time for my birthday.

The reason I am looking for online resources is that I like to do devotions during my breaks and lunch at work and I don't really want to haul my TDP back and forth from home.

Something else that I've done is to work up an audio version of Matins for each day of the week that I listen to during my morning commute. Here are some links to the sites where I found the audio files. These are all free to download.

- Lutheran Liturgical Prayer Brotherhood audio files - not just for the Psalms, but also versicles, hymns, canticles, responsories, etc. (I only wish that they had recorded the Psalm chants in a modern translation instead of KJV) Lutheran Liturgical Prayer Brotherhood

- Some nice, non-Marian mp3s of some Psalms and canticles at a Benedictine and Franciscan site Psalms and Canticles for the Daily Office

- Passages of scripture from a free download of an audio New Testament available at Audio Bibles by Faith Comes By Hearing - Audio Bible MP3 - Hosanna (Right now, I'm using John, chapters 14-17, 20, and some of the more well-known chapters from the epistles, like Rm 8, Eph 2, Heb 11, etc.)

That is because the TDP is based on the new three year lectionary, and the link is based on the one year lectionary.

This morning I picked up the Portals of Prayer that we get with our church's newsletter. It was the April - June copy, but since I wasn't quite awake yet I looked for today's devotion (June 32nd ???) so anyway, when I flipped past the June 30th page I saw something I'd never noticed before.

Prayers! There's prayers in the back of that there Portals of Prayer!

Looks like there are collects for the morning and evening of each day of the week, as well as for festival days and other topical prayers. I found the new copy and compared the weekday collects, and they're different for July - Aug. Different topical prayers in the new copy too.

Luther's Morning and Evening Prayers are in the very front. (I really need to memorize those.)

I guess I'll get up to speed at some point.

I find that while I love using the Treasury of Daily Prayer for my devotions when I'm at home, I would rather travel with just my small leather hymnal. My hotel room almost always has a Bible, and I can look up what I need to read from the Lectionary in the hymnal. The Morning Prayer service (which is what I use currently for my devotions) is in the hymnal. As are the hymns (obviously), prayers, etc. The only thing I'm missing is the additional readings, so I usually read through a section of the Small Catechism, or pray through the Athanasian Creed, both of which are in the hymnal. So, I can travel with one much smaller book and have almost everything I have in TDP.

But I do like using TDP at home.
