• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

The title has a "?" because I'm not really sure what this fits into aside from advice/help. I've only recently been thinking about trying to rebuild my life, essentially, I'm all alone, except for my computers and people I talk to online. I cut myself off from people and contact at 15, that was 7 years ago, I now know no one in my area or anyone within this region. Since school I've had a deep fear of people and I'm trying to live my life best I can, but recently I've wanted to make friends, at least one person I can talk to or go out with. I rarely leave the house but my careworker comes on Tuesday and I want to go to a support type group in my area for people like me to talk with others (got the information off my psychiatrist), I'm really scared about going because it put's me into social situations and outside, my autism wont make it easy for me. Is there any advice on what I should and should not do? Thanks for any help.

I would suggest the following:

(1) Let God live His life through you.
(2) Trust God
(3) Pray
(4) Persevere---don't let setbacks discourage you
(5) Go as slow as you want and are confortable doing.
(6) Look for positive things in your life and progress that you are making
(7) Give yourself a reward for trying. Be good to yourself. :amen: :)

Thanks, I'll try it, not sure how good I will be though when it comes to talking to them etc. Worth a shot though trying to make some friends. :)

hey biblescribe, i think we're both in similiar situations. i have a mild form of aspergers and social skills is where i lack at most of all. i have also been thinking about my social life and wanting changes and wondering what i can do to fix it. and just this past month, i finally went to a support group in my area for AS after putting it off for various reasons/circumstances and i was relieved to be there and around others on the spectrum. i didn't have to talk much even though i was the new guy to the group. it was just good to hear others talk about AS. i also went though terrible times with people (or my friends if they ever really were) in high school and in college as well. i was only diagnosed a good 2 years ago with AS and it explained a lot of my experiences, reactions, and behaviors. my father was also diagnosed with a severe form of AS.
so my best advice is to take a chance and persevere through it alongside the advice of gomatadors.

Thank you for that, I'll be keeping everything in mind and prayers before I go, as I'm there and when I come out. :prayer:

Just wanted to give an update on how everything went. I went with my careworker and it was shut, but I got a quick tour and some information on it, I liked the idea so I deciced to go when it was open. I went and I had a lot of fun, okay I stood around a lot and hovered around one part but they were really friendly and nice to me, which was good because I was unsure about it. A lot of prayers were said along the way though, noticed when I need help I do it without thinking and say it all without even thinking, so if people passing me on my walk heard me praying or singing in Hebrew, they might have thought I needed some sort of help. ;) :prayer:

That is wonderful to hear!!! Remember that Ephesians 3:20 is true. Our God is much greater than any of our problems (one thing that I learned is to say "opportunities" or "challenges" instead of problems).

I am facing the same challenges that you are, so it is so VERY encouraging to hear about your achievement. Thank you so very much for sharing it with us.

I forgot to say something:

We need to learn not to worry about what other people think about us, especially when we are praying to God. I know-----it is hard to do because we want people to like us. However, there ARE people who can see the real us behind the Aspergers. And God loves us and wants us to come to Him with our "opportunities".
