Licorice is a strange candy

I googled it but wasn't satisfied with the answer. I asked the thread to be moved to food as i wasn't paying attention when i posted it.

They have or had Twizzlers in the vending machine at work, so I've gotten a packet of that now and then. There's no Fry's here, but a drug store sounds like a good place to look now that you mention it.

Walgreens has it a lot, fry's is Kroger.

I honestly never saw black licorice.

To me licorice is something that tastes bad and good at the same time. I feel the same way about green olives. I probably only wanted the licorice gum when I was little because it had a picture of a kid pirate. I doubt I knew what it tasted like.

Fennel seed had a licorice flavor as well. Whenever a recipe calls for it, I skip it. If anyone has it in their spice rack, take a couple of seeds and try it. Licorice.

It's amazing to me that most don't like black  licorice and red to me is not licorice. I can't stomach red since only having black my whole life. Tell me how you feel about your favorite.

Red I guess... been while since I've had some... kind of in the mood for them. Since I have no smell, my sense of tasting food is poor.. and black licrous probably tastes the same as the red ones... but psychologically. I prefer the red ones, lol.

I'm really amazed at the poll. In life most everyone likes red if it comes up. It's curious.
Licorice pizza is not far off. Mostly the sausage they use on pizza has fennel in it. I am a bit confused about it. Anise as Tinker spells it and fennel are the same source? When we bought it at the pharmacy it was liquid.

Interesting. So they have distinct tastes? I think I remember black licorice having more of an unpleasant after taste. Probably depends on the brand too.

The brand shouldn't make a difference, black licorice is black licorice.

I was sometimes given black licorice as a child (WAY back when). I liked it ok - it was pretty good in fact. I wanted to try it again as an adult about 20 years ago. It was still ok.

Anise only belongs in certain dishes. I don’t care for heavy fennel at all (a restaurant here used to cover their sandwich bread in fennel and grill it - disgusting!). Red “licorice” isn’t - and I don’t really have a taste for it.

It’s been 20ish years. Maybe I’ll try a stick again. But I don’t think it’s quite as good as it was when I was a kid.
