cowardly using the funeral of a great woman as political fodder.

LITHONIA, Georgia (Reuters) - Speakers seized on the presence of President Bush to attack his policies on Tuesday at the funeral of Coretta Scott King, the first lady of the U.S. civil rights movement.

Former President Bill Clinton, a favorite among mainstream civil rights leaders, offered a teasing hint of the possible presidential candidacy of his wife, New York Democratic Sen.Hillary Rodham Clinton, who stood smiling at his side.

"We know now there were no weapons of mass destruction over there [standing ovation]... but Coretta kew and we know that there are weapons of misdirection right down here. Millions without health insurance. Poverty aounds. For war billions more but no more for the poor." -Reverend Dr. Joseph Lowery, at the Coretta Scott King funeral, in front of 4 presidents....

So here's the comments, from the articles, that have caused the wailing and gnashing of teeth occuring here:
"It was difficult for them personally with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated, and they became the targets of secret government wiretapping and other surveillance," Carter said.
During a description of their life.

Well geez, historical facts are, um, yeah. If they mention that he was a Reverand would it be an assault on atheism? Oh but wait, Bush isn't an atheist. If he was, it probably would be interpreted that way.
"I'm honored to be here with my president and my former presidents and ...," he trailed off, motioning in his wife's direction to loud and sustained applause.
Now that, right there, horrible attack on Bush. I mean calling him "my president," why how could Clinton do such a thing?
"Lowery 21, Bush 3, it wasn't a fair fight."
Now see that, that's an attack on Bush. I know when they've been made too, see?

God I respect that man, why isn't his son more like him?

They thought they were scoring political points at the funeral of Senator Paul Wellstone too. Turned out they weren't.
Yes, we all saw that when a few emotional remarks of a close friend were blown totally out of proportion and attacked as some sort of Democratic uber-scheme.

That would have been the liberals Kennedy and Johnson he was referring to wouldn't it?

Are you saying civil rights are a liberal position? I don’t necessarily consider it so - I prefer the term “libertarian” in reference to rights - but if they are, why wouldn’t liberals honor her by speaking about issues she championed?

She championed against the war in Iraq? She championed Hillary as President? She championed Katrina relief? etc. etc.

Yup. She also supported gay marriage and affirmative action.

Politics were a huge part of her life, and her legacy. It would have been ridiculous had her funeral NOT mentioned politics at all.

This just shows the ridiculous double standard of the left. Where were the partisan attacks at Reagan's funeral? The closest things to politics and partisanship was his son, a champion of liberal causes. There were no attacks, no stump speaches. But when the libs do it, it's not only acceptable, but expected? Come on, it's time to wake up and smell the rotten stuff eminating from the liberal bowl.

Uh... Bush was president when Reagan died, and Congress was controlled by Republicans. Are you suggesting that Republicans should have “attacked” their own party? And the fact that they didn’t indicates a double standard? Pardon me, but your post makes no sense.

The Martin Luther Kings would have been very against the current policies of this administration, in terms of boosting up bills for defense companies, and reducing programs for minorities, the elderly, Medicare, student college aid, and so on.

Martin Luther King, as well as Mrs. Coretta, probably would have been on the wiretap list, as well as many other liberal black church leaders, because of their views. In fact, the FBI used to monitor Mr. King extensively, because of his antiwar views during Vietnam

http://www.stanford.edu/group/King/about_king/biography/

The Rev. Lowery was testifying to the truth, and I am glad he did. Most people attending the service also affirmed his sermon....

I don't see why a funeral should be made artificially apolitical. If she didn't like Bush in life, then why mince words? So we can all feel good and warm and talk about flowers and peace? Bah. Republicans can have hippie funerals if they desire; but they shouldn't complain when others don't want to get on their petchuli-reeking peace train.

Exactly. Her life was political, so why shouldn't her funeral be? If political causes meant a lot to her in life, then they should be mentioned when remembering her life.

I thought funerals were to honor a person, not politics. I'm saddened that people would stoop to tactics like these, taking personal shots at the president at a memorial dedicated to someone who wanted fair treatment for everyone. It's pretty sad that the Democrats on this forum have justified it as legitimate, because Mrs. King was part of politics herself. Just another reason why I wish someone would come along outside of the two main parties and bring some accountability to the ranks. :crossrc: :crossrc:
