Yeah, I have heard that excuse before, too, and it is just that, an excuse. We are not Christ, we don't know what is in another's heart
If we cannot know what is in another's heart, why are we told "A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh"?
(Luke 6:45)
and Christ told us to love one another as he loves us (which we can only approximate, but even He did not react violently except for when he threw the moneychangers out of the Temple).
We are to love one another but we are also commanded to do certain things if a brother or sister in Christ is bound up in sin Anabaptist Distinctives: A Quick Course on Shunning
There is a reason why we are commanded to study to show ourselves approved and part of that is so we don't take passages of scripture out of context and independent of other, amplifying scripture. Satan is all for us ignoring the evil that people do, to not 'judge' and not hold fast to the truth.
