• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Typically such momentous scientific achievements are inaugurated with profound words, such as Neil Armstrong's "One small step for man, one giant leap for all mankind", or when Oppenheimer famously quoted from the Bhagavad Gita upon the first test of a nuclear weapon. No doubt the Directorate of CERN will have prepared something similar to match this historic event.

However, we the undersigned feel something simple will suffice. Upon activating the LHC for the test, we advocate the opening words be "Commence Primary Ignition!", a call back to the 1977 movie "Star Wars" when the villains destroyed the planet Alderaan with their Death Star.

I sooo want them to say this.

When I worked at Fermilab, I got a look at the Tevatron control room. There are automated spoken announcements every time a bunch of protons / antiprotons are injected. The tone that preceded every one of these announcements was the same as the computer chime from Star Trek: The Next Generation :D I really hope it was on purpose.

Damn, I love particle physics :D

And signed. Come on physicists, we all know you have a sense of humor. And don't even try to deny being geeks.

Edit: Strange how some of the signers say things like "This project must be stopped by any means neccessary!" CERN is going to go through with it. We appreciate your concern. It is noted and stupid.

We're saving that for the first human clone, along with shrieking "It's alive!"

Even if high voltage arcs aren't required for the experiment, can we still have some kind of Tesla coil active in the background for added effect?

Well, according to The Times, the words before startup were "Let's get started everybody."

I believe I speak for all of us when I say LAME

Man! that is lame. That's what my boss says to get us started in meetings (checks over shoulder to see if boss is there).

Listening to the radio (radio 2, UK) this morning, the DJ recounted a story about how nutters had been sending death threats to scientists, stating that they would kill them if they fired up the LHC and destroyed the world!!!!!!!!!

Now there’s logic for you

Isn't firing up a doomsday machine under a death threat practically self defence at that point?
