  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Let's talk about the Lord's Sword

The bible talks about God's sword that he has sharpened to kill with. What kind of sword do you think it is? My boyfriend thinks it's a katana (sp??) but I think it would be a middle-eastern type of blade since God is originally middle-eastern. What kind of sword do you think God uses?

His sword is His Word.

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)

and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Ephesions 6:17)

In his right hand he held seven stars, from his mouth came a sharp two-edged sword (Revelation 1:16)

Therefore repent. If not, I will come to you soon and war against them with the sword of my mouth. (Revelation 2:16)

From his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations (Revelation 19:15)

And the rest were slain by the sword that came from the mouth of him who was sitting on the horse, and all the birds were gorged with their flesh. (Revelation 19:210)

Word as in the bible or word as in Jesus or something else?????

In the OT, I thought the sword was a literal sword. It says it was sharpened for battle. How does one sharpen Jesus or a book?

Word as in absolute Truth. Yes the Bible is the Word of God. In the book of Revelation I think the Bible talks about the judgement of God which proceeds from His mouth.

I'm betting the OT is using figurative language. Just like the OT talks about the "strong arm of the Lord" but this simply means the power of the God, not his actual arm. Do you have Bible verse references so we know what you're looking at?

It's not in front of me, but I think it's in Ezekiel, some gloomy message about judgment in there somewhere. The whole book is like that.

Are you thinking if Ezekiel 21?

Ezekiel 21 NIV - Babylon as Gods Sword of Judgment The - Bible Gateway

To me it seems to be mostly a metaphor for Babylon and the ensuing events that would be known as the Babylonian Exile, when the Babylonian empire under Nebuchadnezzar besieged Jerusalem. To the Jews, this was seen as the revelation of God's judgement.

With that ^, it wouldn't be 'God's sword that he has sharpened to kill with', but a statement that someone is preparing an onslaught. This person isn't necessarily God though. Verses 9-10 say,

"A sword, a sword is sharpened, it is polished; it is sharpened for slaughter, honed to flash like lightning."

You're not being serious are you?

No, God doesn't have a metal bladed weapon.

Though God may have a bo staff and mad skillz.

Christ Himself is the sword. Lets look at passage in Hebrews that inspired your contemptuous remark.

Heb 4: 12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

The word is Christ as in John 1:1
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend[a] it.

So the Word is judging you dividing you soul from spirit joints and marrow discerning your thoughts and the intentions of your heart. All is laid bare and there will be no excuses on the day of your judgment there will be no defense. Because the truest intention of your heart will be laid open examined and righteously judged.

The "Sword" is your judge.

By properly understanding it, so as to be able to rightly divide truth from error. (Sorry, my younger Son is big into martial arts and his answer would've been a lot more fun)

I think the teaching of Jesus to love others is the sword--God's weapon of choice to overcome evil and hatred.
