I love Bob Marley!
He is just so good. I heard someone once say that other reggae artists must be mad at him because they all know that no one will be better than Bob!! I think there is a lot of truth to that!

Rastafari is a pretty crazy religion, but we share a lot including the Old Testament. Some of Bob's lyrics are taken from the Bible, and the message he spreads is very Christ-like!

I read somewhere that he was baptized a Christian in the last years of his life. I will try to dig that up.

Bob Marley was possibly one of the greatest musicians ever, his messages were pure and true, and the effect he had on the political turmoil of Jamaica is something to never be duplicated ever. Actually he didnt die of a cut on his foot that got infected, he died of cancer, and on his death bed he converted to Christianity so maybe that will make him seem a bit better to some of the lesser inclined of our posters here. I had the privelege of seeing the Wailers two years ago in Jamaica at the Ritz Carlton Resort, I got to speak to all of them and actually got to play guitar with the lead guitar player of the Wailers post-Tosh. :)

to PS.. not sure if all his lyrics were taken from the Bible.. like I said in a post before, he is very much into Psalm, Proverbs, Solomon and David's teaching. (Alot of rastafarians are).

to Ernesto...I knew he died of cancer.. that deadly disease. However before his death, Bob had the choce to cut of his foot and live .. he chose the latter and we know where he lies with that. Didn't know he had converted to Christianity..hmmm that's a new one.

Once more... Bob Marley is indeed a legend. I am proud to be a Jamaica, and proud to identify with all Bob has ever sang about in terms of, racism, hardship, struggles, beauty, acceptance of self and one's origin and peace. He spoke about love, freedom and his hearts hope. With all these combined... he has touched the hearts of many.

Bob truly a legend. But as much as I like his music and his work and his lovely kids like my admirer...Kymani Marley ;).... I still love and consider the best man that walked on earth.. JESUS.

-Shalom all and one love.

Bob Marley is a brilliant artist and he truly did have a strong sense of God and the Bible. HOWEVER, I have heard from more then one source that Marley was part of a religion that believed the Prince/King of Ethopia was the Messiah. That would mean that Marley wasn't a true Christian. Has anyone else heard this? Confirm/deny?

tis true that he did think the messiah had returned .......

Taken from the heraldic symbol of the biblical Tribe of Judah (from which Selassie is believed to have descended), the lion represents to Rastafarians Selassie as the "King of Kings," as the lion is King; representing the lineage of the King from the Tribes of Israel. The emblem was once worn by the Emperor as a signet.

However tis also true that there is some indication of him becoming a Christian before he died.

"But there was more to Bob Marley than meets the eye and it might be a pleasant discovery to some that Bob Marley, just before he died, confessed Jesus Christ as Lord. In other words, he denied that Haile Selassie was God (as Rastas believe) and asserted Jesus as the true living God. If you ask me how I know this; let’s take a journey with a man who has, for years been close with the Reggae maestro, who once shared similar beliefs with Bob. I introduce to you, Tommy Cowan.

Bob’s conversion

Tommy Cowan, is a very experienced musical icon in Jamaica. Having burst on the Jamaican music scene in the 1960s with the group called The Jamaicans and a hit song from the group that won the 1967 Jamaica popular song festival competition Baba Boom. Tommy has traveled the world of music. He later became one of the most sought after promoters of shows in Jamaica and overseas and yes, he too was a staunch Rastafarian. He knew Bob very well because he managed Marley’s business for years while touring with him to Africa, Europe and the U.S. Tommy was probably closer to Bob Marley than most people who knew him were. “Bob Marley, of course, was gifted, very gifted person. You could probably say he never made a bad song and you know that gifts come from the Lord,” says Tommy.

I had the distinct privilege of rapping briefly with Tommy about Bob in an exclusive interview. Tommy is the manager and husband of famed Jamaican gospel singer, Carlene Davis. He converted to Christianity and has taken his music-wise entrepreneurship to help advance the current movement of gospel music in the region."

As he lay back on his chair resting on the wall of his hotel room at Divi Little Bay, Tommy colorfully described the rarely spoken of experience of Bob Marley, about a year before he died. “Bob Marley himself, before he died, he got baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,” Tommy says with much conviction. “What does Selassie teaches, that Jesus Christ is the only way…He (Bob) through whole treading of Rasta found that Jesus Christ is the way. As a matter of fact, in one song you would have heard him militantly (saying) ‘how they crucified my Jesus Christ and they sold Marcus Garvey for rice…’ One of his songs said, “Give us the teachings if his majesty because we don’t want the devil’s philosophy.” Bob, Tommy recalls, called the bishop of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and told him I need to be baptized now. Just recently Tommy was speaking with the said bishop who described Bob’s baptism. “At one point he (Bob) cried for 45 minutes non-stop; his tears wet the floor. And the Holy Spirit came down upon his body and he cried out Jesus Christ three times—Jesus my Savior, Jesus Christ.”

This for Tommy, spells a lot and will be a powerful testimony to the power of Jesus in times to come, especially to Rastas. It also is a lesson that no matter where we have gone or what we have done in life, God has a plan for every life. Selassie, Tommy notes, has made it clear, he is not the messiah nor God the creator; he worships Jesus Christ.

From Selassie to Jesus

Been there, done that sums up Tommy’s life and career. Today, being an indomitable force in the promotion of gospel music, Tommy’s life is now geared toward winning souls for Christ through the enhancement of music loaded with messages of hope, peace, love and Jesus. Among the things he has done in his secular music career, Tommy has hosted major reggae events such as Sting and Reggae Sunsplash.

Tommy has taken his musical deftness to the gospel music world, promoting gospel shows like Fun in the Son, a major four-day gospel music and evangelism festival in Ocho Rios, Jamaica’s north coast resort town and Gospel Train—a gospel music tour around Jamaica. On the side of community work, Tommy’s

Sure. If there are many different religions that say that they are the only right one, only one of them can be right.
no, this simply means that all of them think they have the correct religion, including you.

person "a" thinks they have the correct religion. his bible says so.
person "b" thinks they have the correct religion. his bible says so.
person "c" thinks they have the correct religion. his bible says so.
person "d" thinks they have the correct religion. his bible says so.

so who has the correct religion?

Bob’s conversion
...Bob then went to Miami where he was baptized at the Ethiopian Orthodox Church on November 4. Five days later, in a last attempt to save his life, Bob flew to a controversial treatment center in Germany with Rita. Three months later on May 11, 1981, Bob Marley died at the young age of 36.

Hello, scuse the poor way this is written, its been one of THOSE long but rewarding night/mornings. Isn`t it amazing to see the sun come up?¿?¿?

Greetz. Rastafarism, as a Real Rasta would say, it`s a form of Ispirituality. I`ve Been inmersed reading about it for a long Time now. These guys are hard-core. What fascinates me, besides the militant aproach and self Sacrifices Rasta makes, it`s that the basic Foundation, wich can be one, can grow, and unfold like a Tree. It has no "Institutional President". These Believers , can be white, black, chinese, latinos, everybody. Dreads are not required, some eat meat, some dont smoke herb. Some believe In Selassie as the returned Christ, some believe in H.I.M as a "Reflection of Christ on earth". Its about Freedom, in about to find out for ourselves our own personal thruth, and then seeing that its stated as seen in the Bible. Pretty Deep stuff ive found reading about great interpretations of this world where where passing thru, hopefully up, and I personally encorage everyone to check it out, with out prejudices or preconcived ideas. I Believe that can be a good strong helping hand in our search. Listen too what this brothers have to say about "apocaliptic times" or "Revelations", I`ts amazing¡¡¡

Why I am Mind Boogling you all With this??? A Cover of Marley in a Magazine with his flying Dreads, face up, sweaty and in a divine-like trance got me reading the bible again, and enforced my Faith with an evergrowing force.

Keep it on the ONE¡¡¡¡¡¡(this my 1st Post...Peace¡¡¡)

Everytime I hear Bob, I go down memory lane. I take his music with me on all my travels and so it gives me so many good memories when he is played.
Also, he is universal - everyone it seems, in this world, knows Mr. Marley, and it's kind of cool to think that we at least have that one thing in common.

Rise up this mornin',
Smiled with the risin' sun,
Three little birds
Pitch by my doorstep
Singin' sweet songs
Of melodies pure and true,
Sayin', ("This is my message to you-ou-ou:")

Singin': "Don't worry 'bout a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right."
Singin': "Don't worry (don't worry) 'bout a thing,
'Cause every little thing gonna be all right
!"
