Well my wife and I are vegetarians, my kids, too, anyway, so veganism isn't a great big leap.

We eat a lot of peas, lentils, beans, veggie burgers, Boca, Gardein products, quinoa, egg plant parmesan, soups, etc.
Well that does not sound too bad.

As lent is coming fast I am planning what I am going to do.

I am always tempted towards using food for pleasure. I'm deactivating facebook and while I'm not fasting (I can't) I am going without buying any junk food or take away food, and using no seasoning. So it's just water, fruit and vegetables, meat and plan carbs for me for lent.

I appreciate your fervor about your new found conversion, but in my own life I have often found that too much fervor early on leads to massive burnout later.

One popular devotion many Catholics attend during Lent is the Stations of the Cross. They have the stations most Friday nights in churches around here, followed by fish fries or soup suppers. It's a way to get together and pray and socialize with your parish community.

I find that the choir practices I attend before Easter are a good way to bring me back to the meaning of Lent. One practice is like a mini-triduum. First you have the hymns for Holy Thursday (which are really my favorites), followed by Good Friday's and ending with Easter.

It's not, but it's stricter and more like the way things were with the ancients. It is a true fast. No meat THE WHOLE TIME period! Orthodoxy doesn't really focus so much giving things up, which I found kind of cool. It's more about keeping to a fast at a personal level doing what you can do with the help and insights of your priest. It's not one universal, blanket thing. It's highly personal.

But in Orthodoxy, things are very much done with your spiritual father. That's the way it goes. I went to Confession the other day. It still makes me a tad tear-eyed to hear the absolution prayer. As the priest drapes his epitrachelion over your head, he asks God to accept the confession of "My child ________". When he says "my child," it really comes home to you the deep spiritual relationship. It's not a generic formula to anyone, it has to be PERSONAL. I dig that a lot.

Well that does not sound too bad.

Well, are fasts supposed to be convenient a peachy anyway? And secondly, NO, it's not bad at all. Nobody complains, and there are deserts in the parish hall to tide people over! LOL....

The point of a fast is to fast, not to have a blast! :p

But for my wife and kids and I, like I said, we're vegetarians anyway. I LOVE the Russian borscht soup! That stuff ROCKS! That Russian food is great!

I'll bet after 40 days it gets pretty old...!

:)

I don't eat fish or any seafood. (Blech)

So I usually go vegetarian on meatless days. I used to be a vegetarian, so It's easy for me. Kinda reliving my high school days.

Never fails I get one or all of these comments.

'Have you ever tried fish?' (Yes, yes I have; it's gross.)
'Try it again, maybe you'll like it.' (I've tried it again before, still don't like it.)
'You should try Salmon/Tuna/Lobster, it has no fishy taste whatsoever.' (I've tried that, and as a matter of fact, it does have a fishy taste, it tastes like cat food. Not to mention the texture is gross.)

Probably a good idea, Sayre. The whole evolution thing can quickly become an idol for you and besides, creationists are right anyway! ^_^:p

Im actually serious :) I think the debate can be a distraction and not productive. I spend far too much time on it.

Spending 40 days on theology would be a great thing. Spending 40 days on what we agree on rather than disagree on would also be healthy.

I'm serious also. The issue CAN become an idol, seriously.

Yes you can have cereal - but not with dairy milk :)

Perhaps Gurney and I should set up a thread on Fasting Eastern Style .

Believe me your eyes would come out on stalks reading what it does entail.
I would love it if you two would do that. Maybe a few recipes? Sounds very interesting.

I think that I will go Vegan for Lent as a sacrifice from my normal diet which is pretty much everything. So basically I will be sacrificing by not eating any meat or animal products for Lent.
