It is not a tradition of men. In the Jewish faith, there are times of fasting and feasting. The Orthodox continue that tradition, as the Apostles (and Christ) were Jews you know! The throwing out of fasting seasons is a man-made tradition, however.

After all, Christ Himself fasted and mentioned fasting and said "When you fast...". As Christians, we should be having periods of fasting!

What's the great evil in dedicating a season to prayer, fasting and conversion?
That's not what I said at all.
I have no problem with prayer and fasting,
in fact, have done it and experienced the fruits of it!

I disagree. Fasting for lent was manmade.
And I have nothing against fasting for a season,
just so long as it's done freely and privately.

After all, Christ Himself fasted and mentioned fasting and said "When you fast...". As Christians, we should be having periods of fasting!
Amen. Jesus did indeed say "WHEN you fast.."
And not only is fasting a blessing spiritually,
but i believe that had we obeyed this we would
have found out the health benefits as well.

I know some denominations suggest that they are
obedient to this, yet if you take a glance around
the room , heh, well .. let's just say no one is wasting
away.

O Lord and Master of my life,
take from me the spirit of sloth,
despondency, lust for power and idle talk.

But grant unto me, Thy servant,
a spirit of chastity, humility, patience and love.

Yea, O Lord and King,
grant me to see mine own faults
and not to judge my brother.
For blessed art Thou unto the ages.

Amen.

be careful not to confuse privately with individually - we are in this together...

Psa 27:9 Hide not thy face from me. Turn not thy servant away in anger, thou who hast been my help. Cast me not off, forsake me not, O God of my salvation!
Kristos, you always have a good thing to share and always in a loving manner.

Grace and peace be multiplied UNTO you!

Fasting is a wonderful blessing from God.
The disciples fasted and Jesus even said that
some things require prayer and fasting.
Because fasting 'breaks every yoke'
(Isaiah 58)

I do consider fasting to be MORE than just refusing meat and praying...

Indeed it is. Fasting is preparation and anticipation, a time for repentance, renewal and a refocusing on God. The ultimate goal is fasting from sin itself, which will lead to God.

That isn't my ultimate goal.

Lent isn't about giving anything - it's about focus on God, which inevitably involves turning away from the things of this world.

Building spiritual endurance is similar to building physical endurance. You have to train, you have to train hard, and you have to recover. If you train hard all the time, you will burn out and end up worse than before. If you don't train hard enough, then you will never improve.

Thanks for that, I love Languages.
The Lenten Prayer of St. Augustine
O Lord,
The house of my soul is narrow;
enlarge it that you may enter in.
It is ruinous, O repair it!
It displeases Your sight.
I confess it, I know.
But who shall cleanse it,
to whom shall I cry but to you?
Cleanse me from my secret faults, O Lord,
and spare Your servant from strange sins

What is anyone doing for Lent? Here it is Mardi Gras and I still didn't make up my mind. I usually give up sweets and drinking ... one year I did the Ramadan-style fasting all day until one meal after sundown but with Easter coming so late this year, sundown is late, too; I don't know if I can do that. One year I blogged on my Xanga site every week day, which was a good discipline ... and some years I give up reading anything except Scripture and inspirational literature.

This year the exact right idea hasn't come to me yet. I hope it does tonight!
