I think there should be a safe haven for individuals in the LDS community. I don't think they should be labeled as a cult because of their intereptation of the bible is controversial to some. I believe that to label them as "non-christian" or a "cult" is inappropriate. Mormons believe they are the "one true church". They also believe that there are sources outside the OT and NT that have divine authority (aka. The Book of Mormon). They have beliefs and traditions that seem to contradict mainstream christian doctrine. But does not the Roman Catholic Church claim to be "the one true church"? Does RCC also believe there are other sources outside the OT and NT that have divine authority (sacred traditions)? Does not the RCC also have beliefs and traditions that contradict mainstream christian doctrine (Immaculate Conception, Purgatory, indulgences, ect.)? So I would have to say that by labeling the LDS as "non-christian" would require the RCC to be labeled the same.

Edit: I just wanted to clarify that I am in no way suggesting that the RCC is a cult or non-christian. I am only using the RCC as an example to make a point as to why LDS should not be labeled in such a manner.

It's not that there are different beliefs, Jason. It's what those differences are, i.e. on which issues there is disagreement.
Can you please give an example?

Well, the matter of infant baptism is a good one. That was a big issue separating the Baptists from the Presbyterians and Methodists in Smith's day, and if read the section that treats of the subject of infants and baptism in Moroni 8, it is so specific, repetitious, and, in fact, redundant that it's almost funny. The purpose was of course to settle that matter for all those who would believe the Book of Mormon.
