Scripture references used by LDS to support Baptism for the Dead
Malachi 4:5-6
“See, I will send the prophet Elijah to you before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents; or else I will come and strike the land with total destruction.”
John 5:25
Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.
1 Peter 4:6
For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.
My comments on the use of the scripture references
Malachi 4:5-6 – talks about the Day of the Lord and the sending of the prophet Elijah before that day. Its about the total destruction. If the phrase to support Baptism for the Dead is on:
He will turn the hearts of the parents to their children, and the hearts of the children to their parents
It fails to support it.
There is nothing here to support Baptism for the Dead.
John 5:25 – Jesus said “…time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God…” This one refers to judgment day and to be sure of this, we should read further:
John 5:27-30 New International Version (NIV)
And he has given him authority to judge because
he is the Son of Man.
“Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves
will hear his voice and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
These words really convey the Day of Judgment. And it also convey that the Lord Jesus is the Son of Man. Here he said: By himself, he can do nothing and he wants to please who sent him – this is one of the proofs that the Lord Jesus Christ is not God but he was sent by God. John 5:25 is about the resurrection of the dead – everybody will rise from the dead – those who done good, will live and those who done evil will be condemned.
By those words, even when you baptize by proxy (for a dead person) – if he has done evil, he will still be condemned. So what is the use?
Definitely the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God:
1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead
in Christ will rise first.
1 Peter 4:6 – says “For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead…” It did not say baptize does it? But how can you preach the gospel to the dead as the bible says?
The dead is no longer breathing or hearing and no longer have a part under the sun. What does it mean - preached even to those who are now dead? In the Church of Christ (Iglesia ni Cristo) we do not interpret the bible – the bible interprets itself. Let us check the other verses in the bible to define and identify – who are now dead (who must be preached about the gospel)
Matthew 8:22 But Jesus told him, “Follow me, and let
the dead bury their own dead.”
How can the dead bury their own dead? Is it possible? Yes it is – the Lord Jesus just stated a fact.
Jude 12 New International Version (NIV)
These people are blemishes at your love feasts, eating with you without the slightest qualm—shepherds who feed only themselves. They are clouds without rain, blown along by the wind; autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted—
twice dead.
This people are the false teachers and the bible describes them as “twice dead”
1 Timothy 5:6New International Version (NIV)
But the widow who lives for pleasure
is dead even while she lives.
This is about a widow – she loves life’s pleasures how is she termed? Dead even alive.
Colossians 2:13New International Version (NIV)
When
you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,
People who are in their sins are termed as DEAD.
Ephesians 5:13-15New International Version (NIV)
But everything exposed by the light becomes visible—and everything that is illuminated becomes a light. This is why it is said:
“Wake up, sleeper,
rise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”
Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise,
People who are in the dark are urged to what? Rise from the DEAD.
Ephesians 2:1-2New International Version (NIV)
As for you,
you were dead in your transgressions and sins, in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
Again it is repeated: People who are in your transgressions and sins are DEAD.
Therefore – there are literal dead and biblical dead – twice dead and dead.
Biblical dead still have the chance to repent, wake up and rise from the dead while literal dead are done for – as we can read in the bible:
Psalm 115:17 New International Version (NIV)
It is not the dead who praise the Lord,
those who go down to the place of silence;
Isaiah 38:18 New International Version (NIV)
For the grave cannot praise you,
death cannot sing your praise;
those who go down to the pit
cannot hope for your faithfulness.
CONCLUSION:
I think Baptism for the Dead is unscriptural.
It appears as the doctrine of the Mormon church.
When people die, they are no longer capable of singing praise to God
and already at the mercy of God whether he is going to live or be condemned
therefore with that Baptism for the Dead is useless
Baptism requires you have to be there personally to be immersed
John 3:23
Even if we exhume the dead and baptize the dead, there is another requirement
Baptism requires the person to believe and repent
Acts 2:38
These things are missing in the Baptism for the Dead
