I'm 28 & one of those annoying people who use pet names on most of my customers. I'm just a southern country girl, and mean no offense at all by referring to someone as babe, hun, darlin, or honey. I don't think I've ever had any customer complain, in fact, it often makes their day if they are male and over the age of 70.
My husband has the same habit when dealing with patients, and I'm sure he's brought a smile to the face of many an elderly lady.

I guess I never thought anyone would truly be annoyed by it...

Glory be!

Women: Does it bother you when other women call you honey, hun, baby, sweety, etc.? How do you take it? And does it depend on who is saying it and the situation? Curious how others take this.

I think its sweet from my fiance or my father. Friends even as well. Doesnt really bother me.

I live in the south, if that bothered me I'd always be in a bad mood.

^this^

Actually it used to bother me a little when I was a teenager, but I was always in a bad mood back then anyway lol Now it barely even registers if somebody calls me by a pet name (husband excluded of course ;))

Not at all.
I especially love one name that was given to me.
Somehow I feel sad and happy all at the same time when I hear that word.

Pet names really bug me. Well, pet names other than 'hun'. I grew up in a somewhat southern area, so everyone is 'hun' but when someone calls me 'sweetie' or 'babe' or 'baby' or 'love' or 'sweetheart' it just makes me cringe and drives me insane. Especially if it's another woman that calls me such.
Now, I don't have a problem if my boyfriend calls me any of the above names, 'cause we're dating and that's to be expected, and I have pet names for him too. I actually find it really sweet when he calls me by my pet name, 'cause I know that he really cares for me, and he's not just saying them because we're dating. *We refrained from using pet names until we were sure that we are in the relationship God wants us to be in. And we're pretty sure we're gonna get married someday, so the thought that I'm the only girl he ever has/will call by those names is really sweet, imo.*

It really bothers me when strange guys call me by pet names. Especially at work, when I hand them their order *I work in a fast food restaurant* and they're like "Thanks, sweetheart" or "Thanks darling". UGH! That's just wrong! Especially if they're like old enough to be my big brother or dad. *shiver*

I don't know, it just depends. Older women, like grandmother age and preferably related to me, who use sweety, hunny, and stuff doesn't really bother me unless it's in a condescending tone. Any younger than that is weird. I really do not like, though, when girls close to my age or younger than me call me pet names, especially, "baby."

In general it bothers me in that I see it as more of a nuisance and I say this as a native Texan. I find it very odd when a grown adult calls a complete stranger they don't know pet names, and I tend to get a poor impression of that individual as a consequence. When a Southerner calls me something then I usually respond with a "bless your heart" ^_^ When it comes to a person I know it doesn't bother me as much, and hubby can call me anything he wants.:hug:

I thought I'd answered this thread already...

I only mind if it's someone younger than myself, nothing is weirder than being in my 30's and having some 18 year old cashier call me "sweetie". Or if someone is saying it in a demeaning way (like during an argument), that's a pretty good way to get fire flying out of my eyeballs lol.

Otherwise, I enjoy it, I think it's sweet and endearing.

My cousin is allowed to call me "hun" because she calls all close family members that. My husband can call me whatever pet names he wants. Anyone else does it and I get irritable, though if it's an elderly lady, I try to hide my irritation.
